Default Budgeting for a cage?

Hi All,

I am considering converting my 996 GT3 to full track duty and I am working out the budget for new belts, seats etc. etc. I would like to replace the Porsche bolt in cage with a Cup car cage that is welded in. I realize it is custom made and doesn't come off the shelf. So my question is, how much should I budget for the cage itself, I'll be gutting the car myself. Thanks in advance for your inputs.

$2,000 for a custom cage would be a real bargain, not to say that it can't be done and done properly. However, I think most shops are going to charge at least $3,000 and maybe $4,000 if any cage painting is involved.

I just had a cup car cage installed in my '02 996. I highly recommend Todd Opperman at Topp Racing located at Motor Sport Ranch Cresson, Texas. As MGlobe said above $3-3.5K

After doing mine.. (have done some easy drag 6 and 8 points, but nothing like this) I would never charge less than 3K to do it.. ever.

Todd's cages are great. I've personally seen them tested in battle and all drivers walked away unscathed. Great guy to do business with too.

2k minimum 3.5k for a fancy job.

There is a range since some shops charge more than others and depending how many extra options beyond the basic.

+1 unless you really want the creative & project experience with the added benefit of no secondary market.

Done properly is the key thing, not just in execution but in design.
Things like cage tubes not welded all the way around, don't buy the builder telling you they can't reach back there. Tubes that dead end, etc etc.
I would plan on a min of 3k budget and for some extra features plan on more. I personally charge more for mine, but my cages also offer more.
It's not uncommon to have all the glass out of a car and even cut off the roof or cut access holes in floor to properly weld/build the cage, a good cage builder will do what is needed and charge accordingly.
