The guys from Werkstatt will be there supporting pretty much all the Sec Boxsters. You wont be able to miss us, we'll be the guys with the Patron Drivers lounge and another full rig with about 10 Spec Boxsters and a bunch of other cars as well. Look us up since Im sure there will be at least one car there for sale.

Tim, I'm really worried about the longeviety of the motors, especially the ones with 80K+ miles. And if you have to put a new 10K motor into one or rebuild the old one, it really does not become all that cheap anymore.

I was wondering the same thing. 10,000 plus labor to install? I guess you could buy a used one but then you take a chance of getting a bad one.

Larry,
If you replace the RMS and update the IMS then you really should'nt have any problem. Of course thats assuming you upgrade the oil sump, oil filter and possibly ad an Accusump. Keep in mind these motors aren't all streched out like the 3.6s.

I drove a Boxster at Sebring last year, admittedly a very tired one and not the first time I'd driven it, but when I got in before the half way point in the enduro I got maybe four laps when the engine tightened up and I shut it down. The thing that struck me though was that no one was going to even venture a fix on the motor, they just install a whole unit, like it's too complex to be worth it.

The least expensive route is to buy a crate motor and accusump. Other than that you are gambling. I tried to go the used motor route and they didn't last. I ended up installing a crate motor and then selling the car. They are a blast to drive but the motor issues can bite you.

I wonder how much tougher it is to rebuild one than an Aircooled motor?

http://www.flat6innovations.com/
they have some good tech articles on the m96 motor. And a good writeup on a lightly used motor nightmare. There are fixes for these motors. I'm not even sure I would run a re-man motor unless it has an updated IMS and accusump.

Why not look here - http://www.boxsterspec.com/boxstersp...r-sale-f8.html

Isn't LN Engineering doing it's magic to these motors also? Seem to remember reading something about their mods to eliminate the normal issues..

Good place to look.

Neither Flat Six or LN are doing anything specific at this time for Spec Boxster. Jake from Flat Six has put a proposal on the table with one of the rules comittees.

Currently there is no such thing as a sealed engine concept in the series. Just run what you brung and follow the rules for the spec. Engine internals are supposed to stay 100% stock.

It is however an infant series and the rules will mature as we watch.

It wasn't Spec Boxster specific Paul, just seems I read that they had figured out how to rebuild the stock M96 motor for better longevity, which i'm sure (since they aren't sealed) wouldn't violate any SB rules.

Edit: a quick look at the LN site shows a couple things. Replacing the IMS bearing with their bearing and carrier seems like a smart idea along with running a 160F thermostat. With a 3rd (center) radiator the car should run cool in even the hottest ambient temps. What are the other weaknesses? I would run the sport oil seperator, deep sump baffled oil pan, and underdrive pulley. Also seems an oil pump gear is an issue, not sure how much of one though..
