A friend of mine who owns a cup car helped me to do the math: in order to cover all costs (consumables + depreciation, towing, tech inspections, etc.) a cup car should be rented for about $550 for a 20-25 min session. This price would include insurance and exclude gas...

Oh, and a "security deposit" of some $5,000.00 to cover for the insurance deductible would be required too...

What insurance? You bend it, you buy it. I think that estimate is off by a fair margin. BTW, VR do you know where GR is hiding these days?

$550 for 25 min in a cup car. No frigging way. I can do an entire race weekend in my 944 spec for less than that given some volutneer work for my NASA region.

Now it not to say the cup is not an outstanding car, but that is crazy money even if it does represent realistic costs. Plus a 5k deductable.... No way. I would not go near a car with that kind of exposure. Sure it may be cost justified, but that stilll won't make me do it. There is a reason I race cheap car.

That figure seems low. Tires alone would be around $150. Engine rebuild costs, pro-rated, another $150. Now add other use items like pads, rotors, synthetic oil, SRF, and all the other stuff you already mentioned. I don't think you'd be covering all your costs at $550.

What does Glen rent his Cup for?

For example BMW runs the ring taxi and charges more than that for one lap around the Ring with a fully occupied M5. They absolutely run this for of advertisement and right it off at a loss.

Having recently set something like this up with Ariel Atoms, the pricing came out to about 1000/hr. But that was with a motor that lasts forever, tires that don't heat cycle out, and a car that is significantly cheaper. Anything under that and it isn't economically viable. It also did include an instructor in the right seat who knew what they were doing as well.

Currently on hiatus as the cars get redone with the nicer Honda motors.

So you're charging a $1000 per hour for an Atom?

It ended up being 2000/day with 2 hours of instructed/coached track time and catered food for the Ariel Atom Experience. Any less than that and you're just eating up the wear and tear on the car. If you don't want to make money then you can do it for a lot cheaper but my time and the time of my associates was worth a decent amount to setup, maintain and run the events and cars.

The instructors we have lined up weren't just your ordinary DE guys, we had handpicked the best in the area and it included TransAm, GrandAM, World Challenge drivers who were also very good coaches.
