Sun Roof Delete...???
My 1995 993 is more and more becoming a pure track car, with most of the interior and sound deadening stuff taken out. The next thing to do might be to get rid of the sun roof. Not only to loose some weight, but also to make more head room. I'm 6'4" (192cm), and even with the GT3 seat mounted very low, I have my head hitting the roof when I have the helmet on.
On the 993, are the sun roof rails and brackets welded (spot welded or seam welded?), or is everything bolted on (making bolting off easy)? Is this an easy DIY job, or will I compromize the structural integrity of the body by cutting the sun roof out? Anyone done this before? Any pictures?

The inner structure is just spot welded and glued in. It’s not terribly difficult to remove, just take your time to peel back the glue without bending the outer skin. The trick is: what to do with the remaining hole, if you are satisfied with a bolted/riveted panel, the whole project would be a breeze, otherwise you have several options but they are all fairly involved... I too am 6'4 and did the same thing, only we had to go a step further and muck with the seat mounting posts to really get the seat low enough...

I did mine and its a PITA for the most part. Its worth doing but be prepared for a little work and if concerned about cosmetics be carefull getting the surround out. Back half glued in and easy to get out, front half spot wealded in and requires lots of drilling. I think all in all I pulled out 32 to 35 pounds not coounting the outer skin of the sunroof I put/ pop riveted back in.
Good luck.

Bill - is that what I will be seeing in my SC without the headliner? I'm thinking I may just snip out the whole inner panel a couple inches from the edge all around and put a rubber bead on the edge. Then I would bond the sunroof panel in place and fill with black silicone caulk... sound feasible?

Are you looking for a 993 or 911 rear shelf? http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsc...lip-250-a.html

If you replace the roof with FG or CF you need tubing over your head IMO. I think some groups require arm restraints to be used if the roof is not metal as well.
A plastic replacement roof will not stop much of anything in a roll over or flying junk type wreck and something like a tire wall tire can come through and hit or crush you right in your seat.
