I took out the carpeting... and decided to fully clean up my race car by removing what really doesn't belong on a race car: the sunroof.
Sean F, who is knee deep in the restoration of his 1972 911 and who bought a mig welding machine for that purpose, volunteered to help me with the task so build up his welding skills. After checking a couple of sunroof-removal posts on Pelican and discussing the approach with buddies, I decided to use the existing panel and to close the contour gap with steel rod (thanks Gary R for the suggestion).
A couple of pics from yesterday's welding party at my house. I have a solid grinding job ahead of me.
Job well done - I am really pleased. Big thanks to Sean F!!! He is a natural welding talent! And thanks to Dan R for braving a big hangover to help out as well!

Please post pics of the intermediate steps, i.e. once you grind it down, when you fill it, etc.
Thanks and good luck with it.

Glad to see it worked as planned Fred! How do you plan on grinding it down, a 4" wheel? I would grind VERY carefully the excess weld and rod being careful not to touch the roof panels, then switch over to a 90 degree angle 3" die grinder with a flexible pad and 36 grit roloc discs, finishing with 50 or 60 grit. Buy a quart of reinforced polyester filler, some high build primer, and make it disappear!

How much does the sunroof motor weigh?? I considered doing something similar a while back but then wimped out. Good luck!
I stripped my interior and repainted it this past weekend. It felt good to finally take that crap out. While I was contorting myself to get between/around/under my cage, I wondered how many other PCA Stock class folks were busy doing 2010 modifications.

Friends don't let friends drink and MIG...
seriously though, you're a far braver man than me.
Looks like a great result though and as Larry said we all want to see the intermediate steps

You should remove the inner structure too before doing the bodywork to the roof, that's where most of the weight is, the weight of the motor alone is pretty small.

All this winter activity is making me feel bad, all I did this weekend was look at the car and decided the carpet doesn't look so bad.
