Default What is the true cost of racing?

Specifically what is the difference between a DE weekend and a club race weekend cost?

1. Let's assume a 944 spec car

2. Spec Miata

3. Formula Ford

Please include tires, maintenance, etc. I know what the cost of a DE weekend will run, but how much more is racing?

this should be INTERESTING....

I don't know so I'll guess....I'll use the miata as "X" in my formula

Miata race weekend is X
944 spec is 2X
Formula ford is 3X

much more

especially in a competitive class where you know you will be getting fender repairs done every day (unless you run with PCA in which case you will get a 13/13 if you even consider touching another car)

PCA club race weekends are 3 days, so you'll have a higher entry fee (but also tons of track time), and an extra night's stay at the hotel compared to a DE. Also add in more fuel, brake component wear, and tire wear because of the extra day. 944 Spec will be much cheaper than any stock or GT class car simply because you won't need a new set of Hoosiers/slicks to be competitive. So basically, it will cost you what a 3 day DE weekend likely would, with a slightly higher entry fee.

Can't help you with the SM or SRF.

I did some numbers and I think it is about twice as much to race. The entry if you do the enduro is about 50% extra. You do run your car harder for longer so wear and tear goes up, you do go through tires faster (whether from use or desire to be that bit faster), you end up traveling further afield driving up costs...... This also excludes the extra equipment you most likely need and be aware, the changes of damage also increase!!!!

Is it worth it........................ you better believe it is, easily more than twice the fun!!! ROLL ON 2010 season

Why do we have to keep trying to quantify something that is known for being fraught with unknowns? Forget it.

I created this for 944 spec a few years back. No major changes to it.

I don't agree to a 944 spec costing 2x a spec miata. The cost factor is driven more by how you chose to race vs the car. Do you want/need to refresh every onther weekend? Some guys do and that drives cost. Other guys don't.

The cost for me to DE vs race is probably 75% DE vs 100% race. The reason comes down to when DE you can get by on old tires for longer and you can get by if the car is not perfect in DE. In race if you want to run up front where I like to you need to have the car right. You can't get by on cycled out tires and you need to spend alot more time focusing. However the costs above do represent the cost for keeping a 944 spec at the front of the class.

Now some guys like to get an aligmnet done before each race weekend. If you pay $200 per this adds up. If you don't bother or just DIY then the cost is minimal. This stuff applies to ANY race class.

Now spec miata vs 944 spec. People think spec miatas are cheaper. However at Top 5 National championship spec miata is expensive to build and to maintain in fact probably 2x a top 944 spec. However a top 5 944 spec can be maintained at a much smaller budget. I know since my 944 ran up front at National championship races in 34 car filed while spec miata had 35 or 36 cars.

Now if you are fine being a mid-packer or back marker in either 944 spec or spec miata the costs can be very close to DE levels.

What level Formula Ford.

Club Ford
Regional Formula Ford
National Formula Ford

The costs are VERY different and mostly being the tires.

Club Ford is on par with Spec Miata. Regional Ford the tires are about twice as much and a serious national effort in Formula Ford will cost a good chunk of change.

VR:"

Nice deposit that should get the driver out of the shop. Now the question does he want to be competitive?
