I've driven the RS4 a few times and to be honest, as an Audi guy at heart, I was pretty let down by the whole experience. It was fast but didn't feel fast, had a stiff suspension but still didn't really handle that well, owning an A4 now I knew the rear seat space was going to be limited.

If you're set on a mid size sporty sedan you really owe it to yourself to look at the M3. If I were in the position the BMW would get my money.

...but maybe it's me getting old, we purchased a sedan not too long ago that I wanted to be able to comfortably put 4 adults in and went for an E55 AMG. It's completely vague to drive, horrible from a drivers perspective as a matter of fact but it's extremely comfortable, has every gadget under the sun yet still goes like stink when you hit the loud pedal. With a couple small upgrades it's making 480hp at the wheels and >500 torque at the wheels yet serves as my wife's daily driver.

OK, OK.........

So, I gather one is a V6 and the other a V8, but what are the major differences between the new M3 and its predecessor?

Of course, you are right in many respects, but I was not comparing performance or handling, just the interior and comfort, which are not that far apart.

The E46 is lighter and smaller vehicle, and in my experience, it feels more nimble; much more handsome too. The E46 has the 'legendary' inline 6 vs. the V8 in the E92; of course the E92 has about 85 hp more. The interior of the E46 is classic pre-Bangle design, which I also prefer and it is quite efficient without iDrive. The E92 has the new trick differential that is couple steps beyond the E46 one and has the multi-adjustable shocks. The E46 is notorious about rear sub-frame failures, but it is not proven yet that the E92 is not.

I hope this helps a little.

There was no E46 M3 sedan. E36 sedan -> E92 sedan.

I gotcha. I don't know why they never made an E46 M3 sedan, but I'm glad they went back to the sedan option for this generation.

Correct...no 4 door M3 for the E46 generation otherwise I would have mentioned it. I LOVE my E46 M3. Soo much so that when a car had to go this year that one was not even on the table. The Porsche left but hopefully I'll have the opportunity to own another one in the future.

Doc,

Head on down for a bite on a sunny day and you can drive my E46 M3 ZCP. I have to warn you, you'll want one!

I still say 07 or newer 335. Have a Dinan kit put on it and it will blow off an E46 M3... and bone stock is pretty darn close.

An M3 is useless as a daily driver in New England. I had one and I couldn't even get it out of the parking space, it just slid sideways

335x twin turbo with all wheel drive and some mods maybe?
