Question Track Tires for 8x17, 9x17 Stock Bodied '87 911

Greetings,

Apologies if this is already covered elsewhere. I have not been on the track for a few years and finally have found the time to get involved again. I have a well prepared '87 911 with several sets of the 993 Cups in 8x17 (yes, 8) and 9x17. Last set of track tires I got was many moons ago and I recall them being 245 and 265 Kumhos. My fender lips are rolled, I have extended studs with a stock of spacers and the oil lines are well tucked away.

What is the current thinking on track only tires for a setup like this?

Thanks!

Chris

Welcome back to the addiction. 245/275 is the standard for 17" wheels.

I run 8's & 9's Fikse 84 narrow body and the tires I use are 225/45ZR17 & 255/40ZR17 Kumho VictoRacer

I'd agree if you are talking Hoosiers. MPSCs (and maybe Kumhos) run different sizes.

So help me with two scenarios:

a) Club Racing maximum performance with little regard to life but still "street legal"
b) Best Drivers Ed Cost/Performance compromise

In the past, I have used Goodyear GSCS (dating myself) and Hoosiers in PCA Club Racing.

Chris, MPSC's or Nittos if they have the sizes you need. R6 Hoosiers for the added 1 second a lap.

DE/practice: 235/275 shaved Toyo RA-1s (I think they are available again).
Race: 245/275 Hoosier R6s definitely

I would go with a 225 or 235 up front the 245s seem to squirm around a bit and don't turn in quite as nice on cup rim widths, and the 275s out back, as far as mfg unless you've got the ca$h for Hoosiers I'd go with the nitto NT01, haven't heard a bad thing about them, then RA1, then khumo..etc...Do not waste your time on 888s...

Just my .02$...

Hi Chris, I use 235/255 on 8 & 9 X 17, two sets of Fikse FM5s and one set Cup 2. Lots of choices, clunky spacers needed with the cup wheels. I tried R888s now have RA1s, and G-Force R1

Kurt, they heat cycle out with lots of rubber left. With your light weight and big footprint they may last a bit longer with less heat, not so much of a deal for DE but for racing it's a bit problematic...not as long life as the RA1 or as sticky down to the cord...

Chris, welcome back to the addiction. I remember the old "Drextec" car fondly from the early days of club racing. ...was my favorite car around the paddock.

Cheers,
