Default Harness Help

Help!

I need harnesses for a car I recently bought for track (DE) and street use. Looking at some web sites there are way to many options and not enough explainations.

The car is an an '87, 911. It has a full roll cage and race seats in it. There are what appear to be anchors behind the rear seat cushions and on the floor beside and under the seats.

I plan on doing DEs and weekly sessions on the local track. I don't currently have one but planning on getting a HANs.

What do I need and what should I avoid? Do I mount them on the Roll bar or in the back? Do I get ones with clips or that have to be bolted in? Camlocks or not? What else am I missing? What SFI rating do I need.

I've seen harnesses from $600/ea down to a pair of 5-point camlocks for $80.

Thanks
Paul

How many hours ya got for all the answers ya need?

I'll say this;

- No shoulder belt should ever be mounted to rear seat belt points. Only to the cage.
- No lap or sub belt should ever be mounted to the floor pan. Only to side sills or bars.

Usually better to wrap the harness ends or get snap-in ends instead of bolt-in. You can get a better angle with wrapping or snap-in. If you think there's a possibility you may get your competition race license, most sanctioning bodies recognize FIA - FIA belts are good for 5 years, SFI are only good for two.

Gforce offers an FIA harness with pull down laps but only come in bolt-in - you have to buy the snap-in hardware. http://www.apexperformance.net/CartGenie/prod-896.htm

Schroth's Profi II is one of our best sellers - although more expensive than Gforce, Schroth's belt webbing is softer and has light-weight adjusters & hardware. Plus you can get any configuration - bolt-in/snap-in/wrap-in, pull down or pull up laps, Hans specific shoulders, etc. without buying the extra hardware.

Profi II 6-point: http://www.apexperformance.net/CartGenie/prod-1575.htm

Profi II 6-point HANS shoulders - http://www.apexperformance.net/CartGenie/prod-1576.htm

Recommend a 6-point over a 5-point. Most sanctioning bodies accept 5 point but recommend a 6-point.

If you aren't getting a Hans right away (although you should have one now...cheap life insurance) don't get the Hans-specific belts. PCA won't let you pass tech using Hans-shoulder belts without the Hans. You can use regular 3" shoulder belts with the Hans. If they are coming off the Hans, the shoulders usually aren't mounted correctly.

Default Crow Enterprizes

I changed out my 6pt. Harness last week and used Crow Enterprize in Anaheim, California. They have an excellent exchange policy and I left there with new 3" webbing and hardware, new cam lock and the complete 6pt. Harness system cost me $200 through the door. Excellent customer service.

See if they can meet your needs;

Okay, So from the comments here and offline discussions I came up with the following list:

6 point harness
Mount on Roll Bar
snap-in
3" pull down shoulder (not HANs specific)
2" pull up lap
camlock
anti-static (won't attract peanuts)

And I am planning on getting a HANs at the same time.

Schroth, and if you're going to use a HANS, get the 2" shoulder belts.
