My buddy used "Harry's" this past week, once you realize you have to put the start/finish as a POI I guess it's pretty darn nice for $5.00! Good strong velcro on the dash works...

Will it give you anything besides lap time?

A couple of mediocre reviews at the iTunes store.... How did it work for you guys?
I would imagine putting it in a good spot where it can see the satellites would make a difference.

Seems pretty great if it does the job....

I've used "trackday" a little bit....but sometimes it takes a LONG time to achieve a start finish point....so it might not be right at start-finish...it might be somewhere else...but will use the same point every lap after that...

The iphone GPS does not use satellites, it uses cell phone towers.

This is a true statement for the first iphone, but not for the 2nd or 3rd iphone (3G and 3GS).

I was in the mountains today out of cell range and the GPS did not work. I'm basing my statement off that.

EDIT-I have a 3GS

EDIT 2- Looks like you're right, but it didn't work for me this past week. http://www.apple.com/jp/iphone/features/gps.html

The mountains probably blocked the satellites, too, or at least impeded the reception from enough of them so you were unable to get enough for reliable location fixes.

I bought the g-tac pro app. Used it once. While I am sure that there is some decent accelerometer data in the output that someone with talent could use, as a lap timer, it just doesn't work well enough. I suspect that the iPhone doesn't poll its gps position frequently enough for this to work reliabilty. The lines on the application output follow the track inconsistently and the speed data seems off. I think that the iPhone hardward (3G) is simply not up to the task.
