I went to the spring Martinsville race and it was very obvious who was going to start and park, because they had no pit stuff or spare tires. Just a few guys on the pitwall. NASCAR just looks the other way. If it earns the money to keep their team going until they can secure a sponsor, that is what they have to do. It isn't free money. They still have to pay to enter the event and qualify. If they don't qualify (and a handful don't each week), the $ isn't refunded and they get nothing.

I guess I don't notice i as much in the Sprint series. There are some backmarkers they never mention on TV unless they are crashing. I always watch for Paul Menard. It sort of started as a joke....I don't have a "driver". I now watch to see how few times he's being mentioned during the coverage, it's almost a conspiracy. It's easy to spot that bright yellow car in a field that changes sponsors every week...

I read that NASCAR needs to have 43 cars to start the race. It's part of the TV coverage deal. I saw the same thing at the Dover Nationwide race. No pit stuff, it was strange till I figured it out. That has a to be a hard life hauling all that stuff to try and qualify and not making it. It's gotta suck for the drivers to only get to do 10 laps and have to stay in the back per the car owners orders.

I'd like to see NASCAR post the speed logs on all the drivers, that way we can see if JPM was screwed or not. NASCAR has a long history of playing games so I wouldn't put it past them. On the other hand it could be driver error.

Exactly.

The fact there is a 5 mph cushion is ridiculous. Either your over the pit limit or not.

Montoya/Ganassi could just appeal and ask for a calibration test. The fact that he was clocked .06 and .11 mph over is such a small amount that the likelihood of a margin of error in that amount is quite high.

But how stupid to push it to the limit on the last pit stop with a +5 second lead. His fault all the way. Quit whining Montoya.

One of Montoya’s team owners, Felix Sabates, who watched the race from atop Montoya’s pit box did not dispute NASCAR’s call.

“He was speeding. He can get mad if he wants to, but he was speeding,” said Sabates. “He did an incredible job and that car was awesome.

“It shows we have the potential. We kicked everybody’s ***. The Hendrick cars had nothing for us.”

Sabates said he talked to NASCAR officials who showed him a readout that indicated Montoya went through two pit stalls at over 60 mph. The pit road speed limit Sunday was 55 mph and drivers are allowed 5 mph leeway.

This happens all the time, why the big deal...because it's JPM? Let's be honest, are some of us looking to justify why a driver from one of the "superior forms of auto racing" in a top ride, doesn't just trounce these "red-neck-mouth breathing-left hand turners"..... otherwise known as NASCAR drivers? Montoya is a very good NASCAR driver and getting better. Personally, I think NASCAR would like to see JPM do well, it can only help bring new fans during these tough times. With his personality he adds more than just talent to the sport.

NASCAR said the electronic timing system caught Montoya twice exceeding the limit as he drove down pit road. "There's nothing to prove wrong," said Robin Pemberton, vice president of competition. "It's about as simple math as you can use."

He pushed the limit, he got the best of pitroad all day long and there were two separate sections that he just happened to be over the limit on it. He wasn't the only one of the day but is the one everyone will remember. He's a great competitor and I can't imagine anybody, any driver that wouldn't have said at least what he said and he knows we're here and we'll do the best job that we can. He's a furious competitor and I feel bad for him, but it is what it is,” said Pemberton.

Montoya's crew chief Brian Pattie also agreed with NASCAR, especially since he admitted himself that Montoya's speeding was recorded via the electronic devices and an appeal would be useless.

The 5 mph cushion is there so that nobody gets to bitch about calibration tests and what not. Did they miscalibrate specifically for car 42?

Demanding speed logs is silly. If there really was a conspiracy to rob JPM of victory (yeah, right!) then they would just publish doctored logs.

I am certain the 42 team will learn from all this. Can't wait for the Glen race.

I must confess that while kinda watching, I was waiting to see what happened to cause Montoya to lose. I figured a mystery yellow or something to bunch everyone back up with say, I don't know, three laps to go. I knew he wouldn't win, something had to happen. Looks like he or the team did it to themselves though (team if the dash light was mis-calibrated).

If the lights on the dash were telling him he was OK for his other pitstops, why wasn't he busted sooner? If his warning light was mis-calibrated he would have likely been speeding on all his stops. Why did they only penalise him on his last stop?

I am not a fan of NASCAR, and the entrants from Formula One and sports cars series are not usually successful, except on some of the road courses once in awhile. I guess Montoya's motivation was the money to be made in NASCAR and the opportunity to race with world class drivers. But didn't he have that in Formula One? So, I am ignorant and don't understand.

Racing is racing. We all know about rules being 'bent' for drivers and manufacturers in all series, even PCA club racing and for Ferrari in F1, but the point is that when you put yourself at risk for breaking the rules, sometimes you suffer the consequences...

It makes no sense that NASCAR would do anything to not let him win. NASCAR would love to have someone from South America win a race, it would be very good for their image and revenue stream. Also, he was not clocked at .06 over the limit. He was clocked at 5.06 over the limit. Sounds like the team played with fire (the buffer) and got burned. Too bad, I was really pulling for JPM.

That's where I disagree. When "foreigners" start winning in NASCAR, the series will die. How many foreign owners are there exactly? NASCAR will keep the separate but equal series going in Canada and Mexico. I seriously doubt we'll ever see "busing" in NASCAR.

This from a NASCAR blog in June 2009: "NASCAR Chairman Brian France said that NASCAR has been speaking with foreign carmakers that build their vehicles in the U.S about competing in NASCAR in the future.

For those NASCAR fans who hate the fact Toyota is in the sport, smoke is already rising from their ears upon the mention of this announcement."

*1 Foreign owner Dietrich Mateschitz (Red Bull multi-billionaire). List of NASCAR teams including Nationwide Series

I had the impression that unlike a certain political party NASCAR was trying to creep away from their hick "base". They are trying to be careful about it so that they don't lose the current fans and also keep the cuddly southern image. The idea is to look folksy and all but to move with the times and get a bigger following. I don't think conspiring against JPM would have helped them in any way. The attention the story would generate would have been very beneficial. Here is a guy who won the Indy 500 and he could add the Brickyard 400 to that. That would have been cool and even the Junior Nation could appreciate that.

The motive is not there. And unlike F1 management I can't find any signs of senility in their actions. So far nobody from NASCAR gave an interview praising the Jim Crow laws for keeping the South orderly.

I agree with the thought, but I think NASCAR did that a LONG time ago. Of course the popularity is still greater in the South and rural areas, but it crosses a pretty wide demographic these days, as far as I can tell. Seems like now, a fairly high % of men raised anywhere besides the major cites on the coasts, has at least some interest in NASCAR.

P.S. I don't think this is the forum to knock the Liberals/Socialists, however I can't help agreeing with your assessment, he's is still appealing to the base....
