God speed, way to young to leave us. That is one thing i dont understand about the man upstairs, with all the people doing wrong in this world and a young man trying to start a career is taken from us.

Of all the ways to go on a race track. The tire from another car hitting him in the head? Not the glorious flame out legends are made of.

I can only imagine his father's grief. As a parent I, fortunately, can sympathize but not empathize.

Yes, which was I was surprised to see that this was at a Formula 2 race. I would think that they should have the same safety equipment that Formula 1 does to ensure that this wouldn't happen again.

What protects the driver in a current F1 car from a loose tire? There is no side or front protection is there?

F2 cars have the 2005 F1 spec steel tethers, as I understand. Apparently they failed in this instance.

Randy, the protection is the wheel tether. It is very difficult to completely protect a driver from head/spinal injury in an open cockpit car. The question is always one of safety vs. visibility, and as anyone who races knows, safety is second to going faster.
