Towing 32' Featherlite Gooseneck (loaded weight about 12,000 pounds) 9-10 mpg (from NC to Watkins Glen)
I expect that the 3500HD will improve with some mileage but will not quite be as good as the 2500HD because of the added width of the dual wheels.
Is that two cars in the trailer?

With my Ford Expedition 5.4 pulling an open steel wood deck trailer with an E class SC and tire rack with 12 tires I got 12.8 round trip to the Road Atlanta race and 13.7 round trip to Mid Ohio going 70.

My stacker is 10' tall, so can you say wind resistance? Fully loaded, being towed with the '03 Ford 6.0 I'm down to under 9 with the low sulfer diesel and latest emissions required reflash. Was probably 10+% better with the old fuel and original ECU program.) And that's at 55-60mph.

The one time I towed the yellow car up when I just bought it and still had Kim's open Trailex, I think I was still over 15 mpg @ 65ish.

(I never tow fast. And if you've had a towing accident, you probably wouldn't either.)

2001 Ford F250 7.3L Deisel with Edge controller installed:

Unloaded Hwy: 20-23mpg
Pulling 24ft enclosed trailer, weight between 9K-10Klbs: 10-13mpg

This is assuming I keep speed in check, below 75 unloaded and below 70 with the trailer. Things drop off quickly above that.

The Edge controller makes a significant difference in mileage. I run in Tow mode all the time. Without the trailer, mileage improved about 15%. Not sure with, never did before and after tests.

Tow vehicle: Ford Explorer Sport Trac 4.6l V8 with a six speed automatic

Daily commute (empty, mostly highway) yields about 18-20mpg.

With an open steel trailer + my car (~5000lbs), I get around 14mpg. I don't have a tire rack on the trailer, but put 2 spare wheels in the truckbed, along with assorted tools & spares.

I think the taller 6th gear of my truck has a lot to do with the decent mileage I get when towing. Plus I tend to keep the mph around 70 on the highway.

Smile Tow vehicle MPG

Towing my steel open trailer + p-car with a 2005 Dodge Cummins, I get about 17-18 mpg at 68 - 70 mph.

Do you have the air suspension?
Yes, the air suspension is very heavy and may contribute to the lousy mileage I get. The Audi V8 is surprisingly good in a heavy truck and for towing with it's decent torque, but it uses a lot of gas.

11.3 mpg is very good.

I got 13.6 (roughly 225miles/tank 16.5 gallons) in my MIGHTY non-diesel, non-dually, non-V8/V-10 Toyota Sienna Mini-van. Yes that's right, 3.3liter V-6 from CT to WGI and back that was the average MPG. Yet another advantage to having a light car and aluminum trailer

F150, Triton5.4, 4wd, 4.10 rear. Get 12.5mpg on a good day without the trailer. With closed trailex and lots of spares, I get exactly 10 going to the glen or SP. Maybe 11 without hills. Usually keep it to 70 mph or so.
Mileage sucks, but the trailer hardly makes any difference. The pickup is actually taller than the trailer.

So the consensus here is that everybody is speeding, and the 16 mpg Diesel rating with an open loaded trailer is a fairy tale.

And I don't feel so bad getting under 8-9 mpg for my 8.0 V10 Dodge gas hog and my 24 foot box.

I tow with a Ford Expedition and get 8-9 towing a 20' Haulmark trailer. I've been towing at speed limits +/- a few. Without the trailer, it only gets around 13.

LOL, you can't get 16mph even if you aren't towing.

many posters are not in CA. if you tow above 70mph, i ASSURE YOU, you will be pulled over on your way to LS, SP OR TH.
