My tundra (2x2 no TURD Package) tows an open aluminum trailer just fine. Make sure the truck is reasonably level when the car is loaded. If not move the car forward or backward to find the right balance.

I recommed you drive through a semi-truck weigh station. Get out and ask for the print out. This may be helpful. It gives you the weight of each axle.

The tow vehicle is fine -- I agree bigger is better though. My tires cup on my Chevy 3500 dually, so that isn't the issue. If you don't rotate them, if they have a lot of tread, this happens to them. I think certain tire brands are more susceptible than others...Toss the tires, get new ones, and you'll be aight.
