Default Dual oil coolers - series or parallel?

Thinking about putting a 2nd stock 951 oil cooler on my 951 (on the other side of the radiator).

Should I run them in series or parallel?

I believe the 996 has the radiators in parallel - I'm thinking I'll take my cue from that.

Series if you're looking for high temperature drop, parallel if you're going to increase the oil volume.

Since the engine and pump are the same size, you're looking for high temp drop....coolers in series.

Hey;

Parallel makes for a lot more clutter in most cases, and is not generally what
you are looking for. If you only need cooling, keep it simple. I would also look
to use a more efficient cooler than the factory one. Lastly, when placing any
cooler in-system with any other exisiting compontents, make sure that you are
not adding any restriction to the system, which would obviously defeat the
purpose and potentialy cause peril. -12 minimum for any lines.

Well, I have a spare factory one (and hoses) kicking about... So that route is the lowest cost. I'm also not ready to remove the fog lights yet.

Novice Question Alert

Can you guys define the difference between "in-series" vs. "parallel"?

My guess is that the option of in-series would have the oil pump send oil to the first cooler then on to the second cooler then back to the motor. Is that correct and if so would the second cooler increase resistance that the original pump may not be able to handle? Or am I all wrong on that thought?

In parallel, sounds as if there are two oil pumps pushing oil into two separate complete and independent loops that include the coolers?

Just looking to learn about this topic.
Thanks for the insight.

Well...

You'd have a real trick getting a 2nd oil pump in, eh? In series adds to the exisiting out/back loop. Parallel sends out a 2nd seperate loop from the source.

Van - At the least you'll likely end up doing some custom hoses/fittings for the second cooler as I doubt any of it will fit/reach. My opinion is that adding a second OE cooler would not be an efficient and worthwhile improvement, or at least not enough to warrant the effort. Cheap is good but not if it is marginal, in my book.

Thanks Brinkley for asking the same question I was wondering...

John, would there be any improvement from replacing the existing factory unit with an updated and/or slightly larger unit? If so which one would you reccomend?

Thanks

For parallel, I was going to have the output (from a single pump) go to a "tee" then to both coolers. After the coolers, it would come to another tee and then back to the engine.

John, you're right that the hoses would need some modification - but at least I have all of the fittings (and assume a hydraulic shop could fab up hoses to whatever length I need.

The oil pump in a 944T is a gear pump and they are quite insensitive to pressure changes at constant flow. The only thing that changes flow in a gear pump is rpm.

The pressure drop from either aftermarket coolers or stock coolers, including the piping, is quite small.
