Looks good. Pretty much the way I want to drive it.

Larry, have you ever driven the pro configuration? I have never driven the other one used in club racing.

Nope, only the club racing one with the kink.

It's amazing how fast you can enter the keyhole w/o the kink.

No kidding. It's a shame that SCCA runs the club version, even for Nationals (except for past Runoffs). NASA typically runs the Pro version which is better for racing.

We usually run the Pro version with NASA/944 cup but in May we ran the Club version.

His line through the end of the back straight and madness is interesting. During the slow description lap he apexes turn 7 and goes slightly to the middle of the track as he turns left into 8 (top of madness).

This is contrary to what the Mid-Ohio instructors teach which is an early apex of 7, hard throttle to the bottom left entry of 8, hard brake hold the car tight to the left of 8 up and over the hill, drift out of 8 down to 9. This carries more speed at the end of 7 begining of 8, 8 being relatively slow anyways is not hurt.

If you watch his at speed lap he is doing a line closer to what the M-O instructors teach and not what he describes earlier.

He suggests a nice safe line through 7, and a little easier way to get through 8. Pretty much DE stuff. When racing, if you don't apex 7 early and carry your braking to the apex, everyone will be dive-bombing you under braking.

You are correct. However per the M-O instructors "the proper line (fast line) is also the safest line". This questions if the "school line" is truly safer.

I know several long time PCA instructors that have a big disagreement with the M-O pros. I find this to create a difficulty when instructing because on one hand we have PCA guys with years of experience, on the other we have pros with daily experience. Both teaching the same track, both teaching people an intended fast and safe way around.

Remember that as you go faster the turn in points change slightly as the car starts sliding. Shane anticipates these slides in the fast lap is part of the reason his line changes. The other is in the slow lap he is over exaggerating the proper lines to show the technique and explain the thought process behind how to set up each turn.

I don't buy that the fastest line is always the safest line. Specifically concerning turn 7, it is faster to brake as late as possible and carry it into the corner. This necessitates an earlier apex, then getting on the power later, drifting all the way to the outside edge of the track. If you eff up under braking, you have no margin, and are off on the outside of 7, looking down at the tire wall. If you brake a little sooner, and apex a little later, you will comfortably track out near the edge heading towards Madness. Because there is such a short distance to Madness, the little bit of extra acceleration you may get from the later apex will be more than negated by the amount of time you have lost braking for 7.
