Renault not ready to fight for podiums just yet
Tuesday 2nd June 2009
Although Renault are heading to the Turkish Grand Prix with several new developments to their R29, they don't expect to be fighting for podiums, according to Fernando Alonso.
The French-based squad have failed to make major impact this year and find themselves sixth in the Constructors' Championship. Alonso has picked up all their points and his best showings to date have been fifth-placed finishes in the season opener in Australia and his home grand prix in Spain.
The team are hoping to up their performance in Istanbul and director of engineering Pat Symonds has already confirmed that they will focus on aerodynamics and the front wing.
Alonso concedes that it is unlikely that they will be on the front of the grid this weekend, but is more optimistic about their chances later in the year.
"It's clear that we need to take another step forward," the Spaniard said. "We will have new developments for the car over the next few weeks and that should help, but I'm not expecting to jump to the front of the grid in Turkey.
"However, I still believe that later in the year we can be back fighting for podiums and winning races, just as we did last year. We know it won't be easy, but the whole team is extremely motivated and determined to get back to the front."
Alonso's team-mate Nelson Piquet is hoping for a good qualifying session in Turkey in order to gain some points.
"My priority is to try and score some points to help the team in the Championship," he said. "The track should suit the car and we will also have some new updates this weekend which should give us some extra performance. We need to qualify well, hopefully in the top 10, and choose an aggressive strategy so that we can move forward in the race."

More brinksmanship today. I hope they don't pull a full on Cart/IRL like fallout on the fans.
Max Mosley on Wednesday sounded unlikely to end F1's political conflict by surrendering to the existing teams' demands.
With Williams suspended from the FOTA alliance, every other current outfit last Friday lodged 'conditional' entries, as the deadline for signing up for next year's world championship expired.
They made clear their entries would be 'invalid' - thus potentially locking themselves off the 2010 grid - if the FIA did not sign a 2012 Concorde agreement, tear up the proposed budget cap rules, and agree their own cost-limiting proposals.
But when quoted by the Swiss publication Motorsport Aktuell, FIA President Mosley sounded unwilling to submit to the demands.
"We make the rules," he said, referring to the Paris-based federation that has governed the sport since 1950. "We have done it for 60 years and we are going to continue to do it.
"
Mosley said he didn't know if the conflict would now proceed towards a solution, but dismissed most of the FOTA proposals as 'unrealistic'.
For instance, he said the teams' draft of their preferred Concorde agreement was finalised 'so late' that it is unreasonable to expect it signed by June 12.
He is also critical of the teams' move in lodging their 2010 entries within hours of the close of the May 29 deadline.
"If seems rather obvious that they were trying to make it difficult for the new teams," said Mosley, also noting the irony of the teams' meeting in glitzy Monaco, on Flavio Briatore's yacht, to discuss cost cutting.

The teams should have taken this joker out last year when they had the chance. As it is, he's going to continue to make a joke out of the "Pinacle of Motorsport" and turn it into a "Car of Tomorrow" spec series for every rich guy that can afford to field a couple cars.

I believe he's waiting for either Alonso or Lewis Hamilton to do something this year so he can all tell us, "I told you so". You know, typical drive by sniper post. Although the wait and anticipation is killing us all.

Cue Max M.'s theme song. DEVO's Whip It.
He's altitude challenged enough that you can tie him down on the new F1 front wing.

Ferrari News

Kimi Raikkonen has asked Ferrari fans to understand that the Maranello squad may not yet be ready to win again straight away, despite the major progress it has made in the past two races.
The Finn delivered the team’s first front-row start and podium finish of 2009 last time out in Monaco, where the resurgent F60 emerged as the closest challenger to the all-conquering Brawn BGP 001.
And with Felipe Massa having won the past three Turkish Grands Prix, Ferrari is being tipped for a potential first victory of the season in this weekend’s race.
A bullish Massa has talked up his chances of extending his Istanbul streak, but Raikkonen is more cautious about the Scuderia’s immediate prospects – pointing out that Brawn still has the upper hand in terms of car performance.
“Ferrari always went very well at the Turkish GP over the last three years, but this time Brawn GP is the great favourite, because they won five out of the six races so far,” he said.
“We’re closing the gap, but we’ve got to give it our all to get back in the lead.
