Patrick,

Yes, I've come down from 315/30/18 to 295/30/18 R6's in the rear...While I was doing DE's it seemed the 315's were fine. But, when I started to race, and drive the car harder, the 315's were rubbing. I got black-flagged at Limerock during practice sessions, but they let me back out afterwards.

I've been told the 295's shouldn't react much differently...and I'm keeping the 275's up front.

I'll be trying out this combination at the Glen this coming weekend. We'll see what happens...if anything.

My guess is that I won't feel a difference.
You should probably have a little less push / understeer Jason....maybe at the expense of some rear end grip. What tendencies do you have re under / oversteer in your car now? What sort of spring rates are you running too?

The car is pretty neutral, actually...I've recently had Motons installed, and now we're running softer spring settings than before...something like 550 all around, and softened up the Motons a few clicks, too. I find the car to be much more compliant and manageable; even though it's a bit softer...Go figure!

Reminds me of that saying attributed to some NASCAR suspension tuner..."Looser is faster" or something like that.

Well it depends on what your track calls for and how much your car weighs too. I've heard of racers using up to 900lb springs. I want to go stiffer in the rear with mine but I still have torsions.
Softer will usually give more tyre grip but of course allow more body roll / pitch. It's always a compromise.
I saw a guy at the track the other day with 3 -way Motons. Cost over $8k US!! Very nice....and they'd want to be.

I'm running 900 and 750 pound springs with Moton 2 ways. Torsion bars were machined down to 10 mm. Great set up, though I am following the tire discussion with interest. Thinking of moving from 245/45/17 & 275/40/17 up to the 18's for shorter gearing.

I have run both 285/30 and 275/35 front and rear on my car and running the larger tires on the front is a real benefit.

For anyone interested, I have 2 lightly used Toyo R888s in 255/35/18 off the front of my 997. They were not shaved and have only 12, 25 minute DE heat cycles on them. They are very evenly worn and have a solid 3 to 4 MM of tread on them. I switched to a taller setup (245/40) for various reasons. The tires are structurally sound. I will let them go for $300 shipped for both. PM me if interested.

Can you give me a brief idea of your car DM? I wanted to go up to some stiffer springs but there were concerns over too much body / chassis flex. I don't have a cage in this car. I assume yours is a full track car with cage?
For shorter gearing you should look to using the S2 ring and pinion. I've had it in my car for some time and it's well worth it. Shortens your final drive by about 15%. Depending on your tracks of course, but I would imagine I could hit about 150mph still. Need to do the calculations.

I feel you will need to soften (I decreased bump) to use wider fronts. I think the 968 has less understeer with the 255's vs 245's. Some of the guys are using 285's all the way around.
