Should I race a BMW at the Lime Rock Koni Challenge race?
Hi,
There are not many 911s in GS this year due to the poor economy and the lack of competitiveness that a LEGAL 911 has vs the M3, Mustang, etc. So it looks like a BMW is the next best car for me. I found a competitive 330 in ST class and can run it with a very good driver for a decent price this weekend.
But I have never raced anything but 911s, how will the BMW feel? I think it should do really well at Lime Rock as it's not a power track, and BMWs always do well in both GS and ST. I know there are some BMW racers on this list, let me know if you have any helpful ideas, thanks!!!

Mike, if you are a driver, then you just drive the tires. The BMW will be a predictable car and your reactions might not have to be as fast as a 911. Other than that, it is all about balancing the grip of the car. I'd think nothing of it. I always tell people that driving a 911 is no different than any other car except you have to be more ahead of the car and react quicker. So, I guess the opposite may be true for a BMW.

Do it. Might as well find out whether you can adapt or not. Spending time in other cars usually makes you faster in your own car. It still has 3 pedals, 4 tires, and a steering wheel...shouldn't be that different from what you are accustomed to.

Looks to me like the only reason Porsches aren't doing well in the team and manufacturer standings is because there are only 2-3 entered in each event. The podium has been 2/3rds Porsche for the last 3 races.

Thanks for the replies, I think I want to do the race as it's an easy one to commute to and should be a good experience.
Ask Grand-Am if the 911s were legal, a bunch were fined and some won't show up again.

Do it for sure. I haven't driven a new 911 (only old ones), but I've run a few newer BMWs and they are very well balanced cars. Also Jon Miller is good people.
Look into automatic racing as well, although I'm not sure if they have a car for rent. Dave Russell is a great guy and does a fantastic job preparing the cars. They have had great speed at every race this season.

Mike that is a good car. A 330i will feel way down on power compared to a 911, but it will also be a bit more balanced. You can pretty much do anything to it and not lose it.
