Hamilton says pace worse than expected
By Jonathan Noble and Pablo Elizalde Friday, May 8th 2009, 14:02 GMT
Lewis Hamilton says his McLaren team is in for a very difficult weekend at the Spanish Grand Prix, the world champion admitting he is not confident ahead of the Barcelona race.
Hamilton finished in 13th position in this afternoon's qualifying session, and the Briton said that was the best he could have done with his car.
"That is our true pace, as you just saw," Hamilton told reporters after Friday practice. "It is going to be a tough one for sure."
The McLaren driver, who finished in fourth in the last race in Bahrain, said the Sakhir circuit's performance had been misleading, and reckons Barcelona is showing his car's real deficits.
Hamilton admitted his team's pace was worse than he had expected.
"That is what I said coming into the weekend and it is even worse than I expected," Hamilton said when asked if Bahrain had flattered his car.
The Briton said the modifications done to his car for the Spanish race had simply not worked, and claimed McLaren was not hiding anything in practice.
"I wish we were, but we are not. We are pushing but unfortunately we tried some upgrades and they are not working for me," he said.
"There has been no improvement to the car whatsoever."

P2: 13. Hamilton McLaren-Mercedes (B) 1:22.809 + 1.221 31

With the spectre of a 3 race ban next season (based on WMSC ruling), it looks as though Hamilton is using some of the Alonso "things to say before you leave McLaren" playbook.
Of course, it has been stated and established as fact, right here in this very forum, that Alonso is leaving Renault and heading to Ferrari next season, so the question is 'where does Hamilton end up"?

Hey, Schumi is back "advising" Ferrari and look what happened... Same screwup as they've already done, that time it was Massa who suffered, this time Kimi. Especially bad now that their car has improved so they're doing better and because in Spain there's basically no passing.
WHAT ARE THEY DOING THERE AT FERRARI?!?!
I've blamed them for their "Spaghetti culture" mentality and how it will end up in disaster but the stuff they pull is beyond that, complete amateur stuff, how can they be so stupid again and again and again?
Little surprised that Button still on pole, Ferrari's pace was pretty good (if we forget the ****up of theirs) and McLaren's lack of was little surprising too, I would've expected them to do better.

Yep ! It sure was Mike
Finn it must be pretty difficult for KR to be motivated at the moment , Massa drove very well, surprising too as his last 4 races have been pure crap with both team and car failures . KR is paying the price for laying low last year as he really seems motivated to push this year , unfortunately the team is in complete disarray and KR has nothing to fall back on so this could end his career..........
Vettel was upset about not getting pole , he hides it well but he really wanted pole today , the red bull must be light and he will need to get away to make the victory happen . Button reeled out a flyer in the end there and it just go to show how good the Brawn is , interesting to see there fuel loads vs the rest to see how much up the road the Brawn really is at the moment ...
Massa looks racy so does Webbo , who is better under race conditions than Qualy. If vettel get's in front of Button or stay close he can win this ....

Button flies to Spanish GP pole
By Matt Beer Saturday, May 9th 2009, 13:03 GMT
Jenson Button beat Sebastian Vettel and Rubens Barrichello to pole position for the Spanish Grand Prix with a stunning late lap.
The championship leader had appeared to be struggling to match his Brawn team-mate Barrichello's pace for most of the build-up, and fell as low as eighth as others completed their final runs in Q3.
But Button crossed the line to start his last lap just as the chequered flag fell, and proceeded to ****** pole away from Vettel (Red Bull) by 0.133 seconds.
Barrichello briefly held provisional pole before Button and Vettel improved, leaving the Brazilian third.
Felipe Massa showed Ferrari's best form of the year to take fourth after being fastest in morning practice and Q1.

The best part?
Ray made me an offer i could not refuse . Of course he did not put in his WDC pick as he should have in Australia , now he is willing to have me spot him 25 points as he picks Button to win the WDC , who would have thunk it ...
