ABS vs No ABS
#16
Endurance, ABS is a blessing. I've seen several after market solutions on 997 Cups. And to quote Robin:
Try racing in the rain, at night, and then factor in fog, hail, poor lighting, you will find that ABS is very popular under these conditions. Even the very best professional drivers find their bandwidth maxing out under these conditions, having to adjust the balance and not having a system that will modulate the brakes in the event of lockup simply overloads the system under extreme conditions.
I suspect that the VLN (German Endurance Championship) is unique in the conditions it holds races through the season. The Nürburgring is high in a mountain range, and we all know about mountain weather. Some people might yearn for those balmy Georgia October evenings that make Petit Le Mans so delightful, but then it wouldn't be the Nürburgring. To give a single example of how different it is, motion sickness is not uncommon amongst the drivers at night.
I know this desire to avoid problems isn't unique to VLN cars, a colleague has developed the PSM system for Rolex cars at Daytona so the guys sitting on big wallets can safely complete their stint at night and in poor driving conditions.
