Should be banded to a pallet or crate. If it's from a reputable company and it is damaged, refuse the shipment entirely. If from an individual, you may have to file your own freight claim which is not a pleasant process unless you have a good relationship with them. I've been in the freight biz since 95 and will be glad to help fellow RLers if I can. I sold my biz a couple of years ago. Also, important to ask if they "interline" their shipments, which means they may use other companies to partner with to pick up or deliver their shipments. If so, it is slower service and more potential for damage as it is transferred from dock to truck more times.

+1 I removed the throttle body and sent it separately to avoid likely damage. It cost $8.50 in lumber and drywall screws plus a $3 wratchet strap to prepare the Vr6 for shipping. You can just strap an engine to a pallet, but this weighs a lot less. I also sent pictures of the engine as shipped to the buyer, so he knows what to look for on arrival.

My experience with R&L has been great. I have probably shipped 8 engines with them, without any problems. If you look at their website, you can can see the free services they provide, that other companies may charge extra for.

Here's a link the the estimator, but just use it to get an idea, and call them for a better deal. I use rate class 70 for engines. http://www.rlcarriers.com/kp_rate_quote.asp

They also sponsor Matt Kenseth's Sprint Cup car, so its nice to support a company involved in Motor Sports.

Do not use UPS under any circumstances.

Sent block and pistons to engine guy and they ruined a set of Mahle pistons.

Much dancing by UPS to avoid responsibility.

Less dancing when I showed them before/after photos.
