No, the rules allow for a change in Ring and Pinion ratio, but not a change in gear ratios.
Well, yes and no.
Changing the R&P effectively alters the gear ratio, no? According to the PCA rules, for those cars where a different R&P isn't available (e.g., the 968), you can change the gears to obtain the equivalent result (ratio) if you could switch out the R&P (were one available). The car stays in the stock classification as prepared.
Changing the R&P effectively alters the gear ratio, no?
Absolutely NOT! It changes the final drive ratio only which is the gear ratio multiplied by the ring and pinion ratio.

This is for 986,987,996,997 only and does not include 968 because it isn't listed. Even the short gearset that was available from powerhaus for that trans did not meet the rules as written. The rule is a flawed rule in the rule book...

Well, if there is no available R&P for the 968 (there isn't), and assuming that a proper after market or custom gear set was available, would not common sense serve to include that model within the rule's intent notwithstanding its omission from the list?
Flawed in the wording of the rule. For instance, "...where there is no alternate ring and pinion...equivalent to a R&P change." Which R&P ratio? 9:31, 8:32, 8:37, 7:31, 1:2, 75:100? Which one can you subsitute? Second, for the cars listed 986, 987, 996, 997 there are not gearsets available that will match a R&P change, although Powerhaus did have a short gearset available for sale (not legal by the wording of the rules because they shorten the RPM drop between gears). Why 986,987,996,997 and not other models? Look, this is just my opinion...
