Any new experiences with the Q7 and towing open trailers. I'm more concerned about the tranny holding up over time. Anyone have pics of their setups with a Q7?

I may be able to pick up a 2007 Q7 for $30K hence my line of questioning. Thanks.

My towing package is a Trailex open lightweight trailer and the 964. Total trailer weight tends to be right at 4,000 lbs loaded and I put another 150lbs into the back of the Jeep when heading to the track.

Audi rates the Q7 (with all engines) at 5,500 lbs towing capacity and up.

Anyone with any experience?

Thanks,

Looks like you have some data points, but I thought I would respond since I have the exact setup as you (open Trailex and 964). I pull it with my wife's Q7 (3.6L engine) with no problems at all. The bigger engine probably would be nice for the big hills, but even with the 3.6, I can go as fast as I want up and down hills.

I'm contemplating the 4.2, but in any case have you towed your trailex with 3 adults in the car and all the travel bags? Any issues with the tranny?

thanks again.

I wonder about that list. A base Cayenne pulling 7,716 pounds? I don't think I would try that.

If the vehicle has the tow pkg you really shouldn't have issues. I posted before in Feb and since have gone on several weekend trips with the car without issue. Although mine is not a Q7 the platform is the same... I would opt for the V8. As stated before Q7 will be my replacement because of how happy I am with the T-Reg.

No Tranny issues even on hills, etc. I also tow a boat but not as long of a haul as the race car. We have 80K on it now without issue.

From a load perspective the adjustable air ride is a nice feature too.

Here is the only pic I could find... since you cannot see the entire T-Reg you can assume it is a Q7.

I pull a short, but heavy & tall 16 ft enclosed trailer with our Q7 3.6. With car, close to the 6,600 lb rating (with factory tow package). It does quite well, though towing in 5th makes fuel economy suffer. It does well, and is very stable with the longer wheelbase. I don't think I'll keep it past the warrenty, however. It's got to be working pretty hard when it gets 8.5-12MPG. Low figure was pulling 70 mph into a headwind when I was running late to start an enduro. I've pulled a 4,500 lb open trailer with it - almost like it wasn't there.

The big, 6 piston brakes (even on the V6) are very nice.

Next time around, I'll get the TDI, though.

Am I asking for trouble towing 850 lb open trailex + 2800 lb car with a Honda Pilot rated at 4500 lb capacity?

Thanks for the feedback. To be honest I was more concerned about the tranny and no one has said anything bad yet. I guess my best bet is an extended warranty on a 2007 4.2L. Yes, TDI would be nice but that would mean buying new.

thanks again.

Extend the Warr just before the factory warr goes out.. That is what I did.. It's German, and expensive to "fix" of needed so Ext. warranty is important IMO

Yes if long tows and/or frequent.... Otherwise if the capacity is covered on the pilot for the weight then you should be fine.

Thanks Dave
What's your definition of a long tow? I don't need to worry about frequency since I'm lucky to get out to the track twice a month, if that.

90+ miles and or hilly... either way it will do it.. What will it do to the car over time is the question. Also how much of a chicane will you be on a hill to regular traffic.

Default hard start in Audi Q7

Hi guys, Im getting a hard/ cold start on mornings with white smoke. I tried changing the starter and glow plugs. Anyone experienced this as well with their Q7?
