with all the different types of racing out there why did you pick sportscar/road racing.
Has anyone done any other form of racing?
I have drag raced and race karts, looking to start the road career soon!
Later!

I became interested in cars in general at a very early age, and then sports cars shortly thereafter. Read R&T, Autoweek, etc. while in High School, and followed all the races reported. Of course Porsches were prominent. In College, after a really clapped-out TR3 and a nice Austin-Healey, I bought my first Porsche. Then came my first 911 as a Senior, and I was SCCA racing right after graduation. Nothing else crossed my mind...until I got involved in inboard Hydroplane Racing, which was possible to do every weekend in the PNW Region....but that is another story.

road racing came as the natural evolution to my driving career. I started autoXing my street car, then DE's then Club racing then pro racing. I love F1 but I did not start carting until i was racing as a means of practice.

Went to college in Ithaca, New York. Went to the Glen not even knowing much about road racing. Could actually go in the garages and see the cars and drivers. Jim Clark won. I was hooked.
Graduated college and got a used car loan. Bought an F-3 car. That was it.

All in the early '70s. One of the early adopters of the Ron Jones Cab-over "pickle fork" design hulls. Started in the APBA Inboard Hydroplane 225 Cubic Inch Class (those old '60s Buick aluminum V8s, highly modified grenades). Moved into the fast 5 Liter Modified Class. Chevy V8s, very highly modified, burning Methanol, running a gear box, and mostly built by the dirt track and sprint car engine builders. Got out when my partner was killed in a flying kilometer record run. Lots of old Super 8 film and some 35mm photos that haven't been preserved very well. A long time ago.

Dad drove (drives) sportscars since before I was around, passenger in autoxes as a kid, wrenching on old mg's trs and healeys, first cars were early mustangs, one an ex trans am notchback coupe, and a beat to hell gt350, but great for autox, did some drag racing, and sand rails, some bikes, stuffed a small block ford in a TR, until it twisted the rear end off in an autox, 2002turbo, until I got my first 69-911s 2.5 race motor with a half cage and widebody, smitten since then. Started flying and with the ratings chase took time away from cars (fixed wing, aero, sailplanes, helicopters bla bla bla)...but still did Clutch karts, then 125moto shifters, Lots and lots of PCA, NASA, BMW DE days, Then racing...starting my own business put a hole in there but still managed over the years....still plenty to learn....just started up some sailing after years....a racing cat looks like fun....couldn't imagine a hydro tho, gotta have some major cajones or lacking someting upstairs.... I follow most road racing, go to ALMS, GA/Rolex, IRL/Cart, and F1 (when it was on this side of the pond)...Still don't really care for the oval stuff, Daytona500 is on right now....snore....I get wood everytime WRC comes on, love to give that a go.....hmm....
Needless to say my carbon footprint isn't exactly small....
Problem is I like to wrench on the cars, build and tinker, so I don't know if it takes away from the driving focus....
not enough time in the day...

Race Car
On an average night, with a decently quick car, say 10-12 seconds, a drag racer makes 5-6 passes.
That's 50 seconds to a max of 1 minute, 12 seconds of actual seat time per event.
One single session of a club race or DE will give you the equivalent of an entire season of drag racing seat time......
15 laps in a 30 minutes session at TWS for instance will net you 45 miles of driving experience while a drag racer has to pull off 180 passes for the same distance/enjoyment.
I can run darned near an hour on 5 gallons of pump gas while my drag racing friends burn 3-5 gallons (including burnout ) of RON 105 per pass.
Erm....these are the arguments I use when surrounded by drag racers...
