Default Help me understand the term "Gentleman Racer"

I've seen it used a couple different ways in various articles that I would interpret a couple different ways. It seems to be a common term and I'd like to know what the 'true' meaning is, if there is one.

Gentleman racer = Purchased the seat.

Pro racer = Collects a paycheck for the seat.

I knew there had to be a deeper meaning than what seemed to be on the surface!

In the traditional sense...."Gentleman Racer" = A rich guy that comes to play with pro's. As contrasted with a "Professional Racer"... Note this differs from a "Privateer" who does still pays to race, but needs to hustle to gather the $$$ to do it. IE small private sponsors or maybe a few benefactors. Most of the time Pravateer however is applied to a team vs factory team.

Paul Newman’s accomplishments in the entertainment industry are well known throughout the world and it is because of this, that his accomplishments within SCCA are so respected. A championship car owner, four-time National Champion and President’s Cup winner, Newman never sought any extra concessions while participating in Club Racing. Rather, Newman, who went by P.L. Newman on SCCA entry lists, chose to blend in with the SCCA crowd and only be recognized for his accomplishments behind the wheel, which he most certainly achieved through sheer driving skill. Though quite possibly SCCA’s most famous member, Newman treated his fellow members as equals, something for which the Club will always remember him.

Not sure that this is always a true statement. Some of the race series fields are populated/supported by teams which are funded by owners that have been successful in biz, and have a bit of talent when they get behind the wheel too.

That is true. You will find them as high up as F1. With out them there would be alot less cars in most fields.
