+1, although Food Angel might get into it, too, at some point.

"Local" tracks are:

www.ovrp.com
www.f1outdoors.com
http://www.njmp.com/karting.html
http://beaverun.com/karting_series.php
http://www.etownraceway.com/main/karting/index.htm

At the local/club level, karting is quite affordable (Rotax engines are sealed, no maintenance (50 hours between rebuilds), tires can run 2-3 weekends).
However, once you get to the National karting level,.....well put it this way, my wife used to complain about the Cup car.....not anymore.

For a brand new, top of the line, loaded, kart/engine setup....under $10K. Used for about half of that.
Feel free to PM with karting questions (chassis, vendors, etc)

P.S. I don't drive...leave that to the kids.
cool ,i ran karts for years, went to some nationals, man those teams run circles around yah!!! I was thinking of jumping back in one to cure my addiction to speed, my 4 yr old will probably start in a couple of years, he is already practicing on the simulator at home and the quad in the yard.

You can start kids at 5 yrs old, 50cc Kid Kart (Bambino) class. Lots of fun to watch. $2500 or so for a new setup.
www.kidkarters.com is a good information site

In the Rotax world, you could go MicroMax and run the same engine for his entire life (Micromax, MiniMax, Jr Max and Sr Max.....same engine, just different restrictors/power valve combinations....)
It also helps if a father/child are both running Rotax classes, since they can share all the spares.

One of the biggest series (while we're snowed in waiting to race in the spring), is the Florida Winter Tour, run by Bill Wright.
www.floridawintertour.com
2 weekends/month, Jan (Homestead), Feb (Moroso...now Palm Beach International Raceway...Moroso family sold it) and March (Ocala Gran Prix).
First weekend is all Rotax classes....second weekend is non Rotax (FIA/CIK classes).
