^^ Please don't try this at home!^^

The 'cigarette lighter' bit contains a voltage regulator that takes the car's nominal 12VDC down to the 5VDC that the camera uses. "Clipping the end off' the car charger and hard wiring 12VDC to the camera = one fried camera.

What you CAN do is carefully open up the 'cigarette lighter' case, and remove the voltage regulator. Splice your 12VDC car through a fuse to the leads that ran from the regulator to the two contacts for the cig lighter socket. THAT works. I actually need to do this to mine, and will take some pics. Maybe there will be less camera fires that way.

Option #2, Just buy a 12volt lighter receptacle at your generic parts store and "plug in" the unit where you want the cord to get power, this will retain the original condition of the product should you sell it or need warranty service. BTW, I used to manage a very large electronics service center and we saw alot of DC convertors/power supplies because of people trying to bypass a plug.

Thanks for posting about the sale. Unfortunately the sale ended about an hour before I got there.

Where is the best place to mount the camera and what is the best way to do it. I have a Tequipment Bar, but there is no cross member at the correct height. Back window is a stretch unless you have 6 foot long arms. Suggestions appreciated. Photos would be great.

Please correct me if I am wrong but is it not the case that the camera will go into charge mode and will not operate when connected to the car charger? Thus, the need for the frankencharger?

I have not worked with Aiptek charger, but I would be surprised if the supplied 12volt cord unit does not also act as a a supply voltage to the system. What Tony is describing above is circumventing the need for the accesory lighter plug. Nothing wrong with this, but if your not interested in the effort a lighter receptacle can be remotely mounted and the plug can be inserted there. I have done this with accessories to provide a universal source location.

Try ebay they are going for around $150 for the 520 line of resolution models. Sony has a 580 CCD version out.
