Wheres a good source for used R-compound tires. I've seen several threads about buying used qualifying tires etc. May be a way to save a couple bucks..any suggestions? 245/17's

Interesting (and useful) question.
I have heard of good deals on used tires, but I wonder, by the time you get done paying for mounting and rebalancing, whether the savings are all that much. Since that charge (locally) is about $80 for 4, I suppose it might well be worth buying used.
I don't know, just wondering (especially after recently paying $1300 for 4 Hoosiers).

I think with a tire like a Toyo RA-1 the scrubs are a great value if you can find them since they're good all the way to the cords. The new R888 or MPSC's are a little harder to justify knowing they heat cycle out before they cord but I"d probably still go for scrubs in them if I could find them.
However I'm not sure I'd actually shell out money for a used hoosier or the like knowing how short their lifespan is anyhow unless they were REALLY REALLY cheap. As stated above, the mount and balance charges start to add up pretty quickly.

same here.... I buy the used ones for DE's and Race practices, and use new ones for races. Bob typically has a lot of inventory, he makes sure everything still had treadwear left or he doesn't even warehouse it.

I have bought some used tires in the past, all Toyo RA1's. I make sure to check the date of manufacture and factor in the wear, shipping, mounting/balancing, etc to make sure it is worth it. I have free access to tire mounting equipment so that helps a lot. I don't buy used Hoosiers because I have thrown away plenty of them that looked okay but had no grip left in them. There are some good deals to be had on Hoosier GrandAM slicks though so if they fit your car they might be worth a shot. I have bought tons of discontinued tires from Hoosier when they introduce a new model or a racing series switches, only happens once in a while but it is always a good deal. I have also considered used tires a bunch of times and passed because it wasn't really a good deal when all was said and done. If you are paying $80 to mount and balance a set of 4 you need to shop around, I was paying $40 before I started doing it myself.

Funny thing is that the shop does a sloppy job (in terms of customer service). Last time we mounted the Hoosiers on the Fikses, they left the grease (?) all over the front of the wheels. Sheesh...

The best place for used R-compound tires and slicks is from Bob Chick he gets his tires from Woodman among others. Prices are great and so is the service. His phone # is 843-762-7324 his email is usdrctrs@AOL.COM. No connection just a happy customer.
