I've enjoyed the weight distribution the cayman offers on the track. The extra hp will def make it more fun. Wish I had the cash to build a racecar out of one.

25 Hp increase is lame. There are already 350-370 Hp upgrades for the 295 Hp Cayman S, that's how under-tuned the 2006 Cayman S is. The good thing is that with some tuning the new Cayman S could get to 2004 GT3 power levels, and with the LSD (and a stiffer non-stock suspension) it can be a fast track toy that overheats-the-power-steering-pump.

I was more interested in the base cayman...

2.7 to 2.9L +20hp to 265 hp. Std 6 speed and an option LSD.

Wait, the cayman costs 70k?

Sorry, 996 GT3 all day........and the next day too.

How much weight has the new cayman gained?

It will be relatively close to the 996 GT3 in weight power and have the advantage of a PDK. Will be interesting to see how fast it is comparatively, though obviously the suspensions are worlds apart.

I've driven one at Barber and was a treat but 70 large will also get you an excellent 993 TT, 965, or 964 Cup.
To each his own but better P-Car options exist headed by GT3 IMO.

It is not really possible to compare used cars to new ones. Late mode used ones nearly always will have a better performance to dollar equation.

Heck even my 944 Turbo S can hold it own vs a 2.7L Cayman. What 12k vs 50k. Of course one is used and the other is new.

If you want to talk about the best on track speed for 70k don't bring up ANY Porsche..... There are many cheaper options out there.

lets not forget, when you compare it to new price porsche cars it is still a good value, A new 911 same options is over 100 for 09. I sure wish I could solve a few minor problems but I still think we find out that this car will be a widely used track car. I hope we get a chance to see a few more race ones next year

hahahaha I agree completely. you can put an x51 engine in a cayman for 20g's. and you get 90hp increase or something.

seriously folks. if you think the new LSD is going to be any good, you might as well pass the kool-aid because not even the stock 997GT3 LSD is up to the task to repeatedly being bashed on the track.

to really make a cayman into a working track car you'd need to spend at least 25k, and that's being conservative. I don't see the point personally. if you want a mid-engined track car- get a 1992 NSX and throw brakes, clutch, cage and motons in it. 275hp mid-engine for less than 45k.

Problem is I do not fit in this car. I wear a 34 inseam in jeans and my knees are in the dash and steering wheel of a Cayman. I also say this new Cayman needs much more power for $70K.

I love it. Would prefer the new engine, which is supposed to do away with the RMS problems that plague even GT3's. At least the power steering pump thing (if it still exists with the DFI motor) can be fixed with an electric setup from a Cup or MR2.

Well my initial thought is that very few of us take our new Porsche and thrash it on the track but buying a used one in a few years and adding the appropriate upgrades to the suspension etc this WILL BE a very potent track car.
The power steering issue is one of insulation and I hope that with the new engine the routing of the lines will have been resolved.
The handling of a street Cayman is better than any current street Carrera...Sorry.
I know of street Caymans with only MPSC turning mid teens at VIR. It is a great package right out of the box.
