I agree in concept, but I hate to think about what this would do to DE attendance, and the trickle down effect on tracks.

Its now believed the steering rack mount on the right side gave way and that cause the wheel to toe out and car to veer right off the track.

Sorry I don't have the video but I did see it. Clearly shows the drover online braking straight then suddenly veers to the right.

True. And also, it would prevent a lot of people from trying DE's at all. Think about it, $300 for helmet, 600 for HANS, $1000 for seats, $300 for belts, $150 for harness bar. That would've been a non-starter for me, as I wasn't sure that the track was for me. Now that I've done 2 DE's, I'm in for the long haul, and will start the safety upgrades this winter.

Agreed!

At some point in the groups ie. Group 4 & 5 (higher level) these items should be required. Although it doesn't take much speed to get hurt, the lower groups likly are not traveling as fast.

I suggest we adopt RL-wide nomenclature of:

ra = Road Atlanta
RA = Road America

I love both tracks, just RA, er, Road America is bigger so it "wins" the use of capital letters.

OK, carry on with H&N conversation. My $.02, I use a Hans, hope to never need it.

There will be dramatic improvements in the cost of H&N restraints in the near future.

No doubt. At some point, a helmet and hans should be sold as a unit.

Or base it on terminal velocity. If you want to exceed XXX MPH, you need kosher harnesses. The applicable limit would the attainable velocity of a 944 n/a on that track, plus 5MPH. Having run in novice, intermediate and advanced groups, what scares me the most is the novice with 500HP.

I have seen instructors use a kind of HANS-like device that straps onto your back and may offer some protection with a factory 3 point belt. Anyone know who makes those or how well they work?
==============
Yes it is called an R3 and seems to offer the same protection as the HANS but does not require special belts to operate. Popular with instructors for that reason. Available from CDOC an others.

The market is developing rapidly, so economies of scale will kick in soon. I would not be surprised to see a high performance H&N restraint in the $100 range before long.

A Hans cost a lot less than 1 new set of R-compound tires. No excuse for anyone who tracks their car more than a few times.
