Default Q re 996: power steering fluid overheating

The power steering fluid in my 3.4L 996 sometimes overheats resulting in some spewing out the air purge value. The purge valve "cap" isn't secured very tight, and the pressure pushes it up, or sometimes off completely.

Any thoughts on the reason for this? [do the power steering lines need to be insulated/isolated?]

Any thoughts on how to fix/rig this? I've been adhering to the "put some more in" school for now. But I'd like to identify if there is a problem and how it can be fixed. FWIW, this is a crate 3.4 engine installed this year, now with around 8,000 miles on it.

Just a WAG, but might you be over filling the PS reservoir? No experience with that model, but other vehicles that I have owned seem to have had a "full" level that was well below the capacity of the reservoir. Could that me for expansion?

td,

Get an Underdrive Pulley (slows down the PS pump and other accessories). Few different diameters out there. I had a Mantis in my old car, the BSR also has the Mantis. I also had a cooler in the old car. Don't bother trying to 'insulate' the lines, it will be a waste of time (BTDT).

And as Bull points out, DO NOT overfill, even a little. You actually want to be a tad on the low side.

This is also a known problem in some Cayman S's that are tracked.

Hey td - the power steering was the last thing to go on my Cayman S before I sold it. So glad it was still under warranty. Boardwalk got it all squared away and I got the car delivered. As I was driving the car for the last time, it felt (and smelled) brand new, quite, and comfy. Wish I could have kept it for a street car but I'll stick to the mom-mobile for a daily and the GT3 on the track. Speaking of, did you get any video of me Saturday?

LOVE your new bumper. I bet all the girls tell you that...

Met the Mantissport folks at Road Atlanta last weekend. Nice folks. Jeff bought me their rear stress bar for my b-day last year. btw, I don't care how into cars your girl my be, DON'T buy her a car part for her b-day. Unless, it's attached to a whole car. Then you're good.

So, anyway... took the Cayman back to stock so selling this bar for $100 if anyone's interested.

Whatever solution you go for, do it soon. Pentosin is highly flammable and I don't think you want to have a Porsche bonfire.
