As I see it was very smart, he had nothing to lose in the manoover and 'possiblly' lots to gain. By unlapping himself he gave himself the opportunity if mayhem occured ahead of him to get some places back. Crazier things have happened before and to me shows he is a racer to the last and does not give up!!!
