944 racing in Texas?
944 racing experts I need your help:
944 racing seems to be a good, inexpensive way to get into the sport and it appears that 944 racing is going like gangbusters in many areas of the country. However, I live in Texas and the 944 racing opportunities in this state are not as clear - I just don't see a lot on the net about it. To add to the confusion, there seem to be a huge number of different 944 classes: 944spec, spec944, 944 challenge, 944 cup, GTS challenge, 944 supercup, just to name just a few. Also - there are the different organizations: it looks like PCA does two races a year in Texas whereas NASA does about 6 or more. SCCA looks to have many others as well...
I want to pick up a 944 and get started, but am not sure what kind of car and racing series to target. So what would you all recommend I look at? Sounds like spec944 is nice and cheap and NASA seems to support that class in Texas, but I can't find much more info that - are there many spec944 cars in Texas? Also - can spec944 cars race in PCA and if so, what class? GTS challenge sounds good as well, but is probably a lot more expensive since they seem to be higher HP cars? Any other advice?
TIA!

944 spec is just getting going in Texas. The critical mass has not been reached yet, but it is out next frontier. We have a 2-3 being built there right now.
Stop by http://944spec.org and visit the forums. You can interact with the guys down there and learn more.
944 spec cars can race in PCA in the SP1 class.
944 spec/ spec 944 and 944 challenge are all the same thing (we sort of)
944 challenge is the name NASA uses when refering to 944 cup, 944 super cup and 944 spec.
spec 944 and 944 spec are often interchanged by people, but there is also a SCCA regional only class in Arizona that goes by spec-944. The official class name in NASA is 944 spec.

Don't forget there's a bunch of us up in KS looking to get into the series (just not a NASA region to race in). I'd want to join us up with TX as most of your tracks are only 8-10 hours tow for us and we have HPT, Hallet, Hastings, and MAM up here. I'd be willing to take a trip to Birmingham for a good race too. PCA is pretty strong out in my area so we always have SP1 class.
Shoot me a PM as I'm building a Spec car right now and we have some 6-7 others SP1 / 944 Spec cars in process - just need to get them to come with me to a 944 Spec race weekend.

I think I might be one of the 2-3 Joe mentioned. I'm pretty much finished with my project, which is built to 944spec rules. I already had the car, and began the project for SCCA ITS but as 944spec looked like it might get going here I decided the economics of the ruleset combined with the fact that I'd have options to run SP1, ITS, 944cup, etc (although not necessarily competitively in all) made the most sense for me.
I'm plenty rusty, having not been on track in nearly 10 years, so I intend to do plenty of DEs prior to going wheel-to-wheel. With the car pretty much ready, I'm finally able to start concentrating on that progression.
I'm in your area, so if you'd like to discuss further let me know.

I split my time between St. Louis and Dallas. Right now my 944 Spec car is in St. Louis, but I'm considering moving it to Motorsport Ranch for the winter. If I do that, then I will start racing with NASA Texas in the Spring.

I am in Houston Texas and building a car for GTS in NASA, I am trying to get a number of people to join in and do some more cars for the NASA GTS series. It is fun racing, a great group to race with and the cars can be modified nicely ! I also do some stuff with PCA and some other groups, SCCA , DE's with PCA,Texas Motorsports club, some private groups and private coaching, and on occasion Drivers Edge. Let me know if you have any questions,

BTW - my 944 is a 1985.5 944 NA, that I am building to GTS2 rules and then will go to GTS3 with it if I think I can be competitive there as well. I should make the last NASA race of the season with it if all goes as planned , and a few DE's before that.

SpecBoxster in Texas is growing quickly. 10+ cars already running or under construction and the series has only existed for 1/2 year. Economical and I am certain we will have bigger fields than the 944 crowd. Car also fits wonderfully into NASA GTS-2.

Thanks for all the advice everyone...
SpecBoxster does sound fun and looks to be a good bang/$, but I'm looking for a cheaper entry into racing to get started (hence the appeal of the 944 variants). It sounds like my real decision needs to be between 944spec/SP1/ITS vs 944supercup/GTS/F/etc.
In any case, I definitely plan to buy a race-ready car rather than building one.
