I'd consider gluing a rubber grommet on the end of a dip stick, just wide enough
to swab down the dip stick tube on the way in. I might do it to a spare dipstick so
I don't risk the gommet coming off in the motor after hours of heat degrading the glue.

Oh, and another tangent about reading a dipstick, have you caught the trick
oil-change places do when they show you the dipstick, to avoid topping you
off (I've seen it several times) where the guy pulls the dipstick out after the
refill, and casually points the tip upward for a second, watching it till the oil
*drips down to the full mark* before showing it to you?

Yeah, I'd be a little worried about rubber bits coming off in the tank. Not sure I'd do that. Unless you have a spare engine to go with that spare dipstick...

Try Brake Cleaner blown down in the dipstick tube, it'll dry out, or burn off easy. Maybe tissue on the end of the dipstick?
