Drenth Gearboxes
#31
Not all hope is lost. Here is the e-mail I recieved from Drenth:
We thank you for your request for quotation!
We did the sequential unit for our 4 speed dog gearsets used in Auto Cross
here in Holland years ago and have not produced since 2002. The gearset
and sequential set fits the 915 gearbox.
For what application you are looking at sequential shifting, road use ore
sport events?
Kind regards,
Mit freundlichem Gruß,
Met vriendelijke groet,

I'm not sure if this means they will or won't make a set for a 915 but I will keep you posted.

The note from Drenth could be taken to mean that the sequential unit from one of Drenth's other gearboxes (the 4 speed), also fits the 915 (4 or 5 speed hopefully) ...
Agreed that a 4 speed would be useless for the track.

He wrote me back and inquired as to whether it was a one-off or would I be wanting more than one. I think if we had more info and could put together a group buy, they might make a new run of the kits. I did not follow up as I was more curious than anything.

Unless you did away with 1st and just used 2 thru 5.

But then you couldn't employ the trick of using a second gear ratio in the first gear position, a short third gear in the second gear position, and so forth, to give you five usable gears. Not an advantage at most track, but it's a nice option to have if you're planning to build a killer trans (which I suppose we'd be doing by making a sequential dog box out of a 915).

From a design perspective, you'd want to work with two gears on the same shift rail / shift sleeve (1st/2nd in a 915, or 2nd/3rd in a 901 for instance). So putting a 2nd gear ratio in 1st position makes sense for the 915.
Eliminating synchros provides internal room to work with. Perhaps a 6-speed 915 with progressively narrowing gear faces (6th being about 60% the width of 2nd gear) ?
