Default Tall Racers - Need to understand headroom with helmet

I currently have a 99 C2 Cab and I interested in getting into racing. I know that a roll bar is mostly likely necessary, but I am worried about my height in a 996 with a helmet on. I am 6'3" and was wondering how the fit with a helmet is?

Also, I am considering a getting 996 coupe track car. With being 6'3", would I be able to use a roll bar, with a sunroof, or is it necessary to look for a non-sunroof car. Or is it best to move a roll bar back and forth in my current cab?

OMG, your avatar ROCKS!!!

With stock seats & sunroof, you will have a problem, frankly.

You'll want to get a cage, not a roll bar. The trick to getting extra inches is to have a shop cut off the factory seat rails and weld a structure between the tunnel and the sill to attach the seat brackets to. That will get you several additional inches.

And yes, you'll want a coupe

For helmet height, the more expensive helmets (Arai, OMP) are usually more aerodynamic and have a lower profile compared to other brands that are like a bubble on your head. Stock seats will still be an issue, though. Either shave the bases and remove the bottom mounts or upgrade to fixed back racing seats with sidemounts to sit the lowest.

When I inquired about building a 996 race car my shop told me that they have the most room [of the 911's] and even a goon like me (6'3", 230) would fit no problem...much better than my SC. So although you may need to make some mods you're starting with the best platform...as far as roominess is concerned.

Thanks. So it seems that a coupe is the better choice, and get the seat lowered, or get race seats. I will also look at some "better" helmets.

BTW, veloce, my avatar is Jessica Alba.

I was just talking with a 6'4" 944 spec racer. He is going to a custom cage carefully installed to meet his particular size requirements. He is tall and slender, but has a longish torso. He fits in the 944, but is taking the time to ensure all works well. He used to run a bolt in cage, but we never comfortalbe since it never fit him well. Guys of average stature typically are pretty easy. The taller guys fit, but ALOT more care must be taken to ensure they fit well. Find a good cage builder and work with him closely to ensure all works for you.

Yeah, race seats, and in my spec boxster I just fabricated a fixed position bracket such that the seat was as low (and in the right lateral placement too) as possible. I had problems with my 'wing' on my Recaro SPG Hans clearing the rollbar support.

In the 964 I was never really happy with the solution. I could never get the seat low enough.

I am 6'2" with a Bell Helmet.

Seat setup is never easy.

The stock seats will need to go.

I was once 6'5", but am now married, so may be a bit less. No 996 experience, but with both a 993 and my current 964 RSA that have sunroofs, I have to mount Kirkey seats to the floor mounts with no slider. The seat is fixed in place where I like to have it for track droving, and my head just brushes the headliner with a helmet. The 964 Cup, with no sunroof of course, was spacious with almost an inch of headroom with a Kirkey seat and a slider.
