Chin VIR Footage...

I only use 6th gear at the very end of the front and back straight. I have noticed a change since have the LWFW and clutch that the motor revs much quicker allowing me to get through the gears quicker. I probably have no business shifting to sixth though but I just hate banging off the rev limiter just before going into the brake zone.
ps. where you at the Chin event? I remember meeting you a few events back but didn't see you there this time.

Dell,
"I just hate banging off the rev limiter just before going into the brake zone."
I don't know your car specifically, but that makes perfect sense especially since this is just DE and you aren't going to take home any prize money. I recently had my car dyno'd, and my peak torque is @ 4400 and peak hp is @ 5800. Really no need to go past that peak hp. Most of the info I have read says best acceleration is accomplished by shifting from peak hp to peak torque. I used to take it to redline (6300) and occasionally allow it to go to 7000 if I was running out of gear, like turn two. Now I just take it in 3rd.

The problem (if we can call it that ) is that the GT3 revs to 8200 redline and all the power is from like 6K+ rpm and if you shift before redline you will be BELOW the power band. So, I try to take it all the way to the limiter and shift thus maximizing power. If you shift well before redline you will be at a severe deficit that makes the upshift almost a step backwards. The place I have noticed it most is the front stretch at VIR. Either bang on the limiter entering the brake zone, start braking sooner by getting off the gas sooner, or just shift to 6th and keep going

in all the time i only meant those 2 areas. i wasnt there with chin but i love running with them. mark hicks and the crew do an awesome job.
i think there was just a debate about going thru the gears or making one shift

VR....going thru all the gears there would be very upsetting on the car. 4 shifts versus 1 while trailbraking from over 150? Not good.
Jenk....totally agree. Mark and the rest of the gang at Chin are awesome. See you at the next event!

Everytime I see Dell's clips, it makes me wanna go back to VIR and start driving nonstop. Too bad I won't be there till September. Thanks for the videos.
Also, haven't tried properly to go into 2nd at the end of back straight yet. I usually shift down to 5th then 4th at the end of back straight and into turn 14(?) and downshift again to 3rd before the roller coaster. Dell is right about more shifting = more unsettledness of the car (especially at that part of the track) because sometime when I'm not smooth while down shifting, braking and turning there, car go very nasty and unstable. Also, (IMHO) 2nd has way too much torque to take the roller coaster section of the track. Whenever I'm in 2nd, I have to worry about throttle input a lot more than when I'm in 3rd. But, I'll definitely try it again next time out. Need to grow some ***** and get more seat time at VIR baby!

I used to bang down through the gears to 3rd, trailbrake through T14, and then have a short burst of speed between trailbraking T14 and T14a, trail T14a and then down to 2nd just before heading down the roller coaster. After talking with Seth and Larry about this they said they did it the way I do it now. I am now able to brake just a tad deeper but more importantly carry more speed and be in more control of the car.
With that said, I highly rec'd that you do NOT shift to 2nd there and instead use 3rd when transitioning between the back and the roller coaster until you have all the other elements totally down (trailbraking, apexes, etc.).

Dell... I hit every gear on the way down . 6-2 back and 5-2 front i guess its frome the cup car driving ... i never want to have a M.O.R. in those cars.. ill try it at next time see if data shows any difference in the section times... that may just get me over my "hump"

I think it reduces the chance of a MOR, especially 6-2, not so much on the 5-2.
I'll go back over the data and see what the times are like. in those segments. My guess is maybe a tenth or two at most?
