Default Slotted Rotors

{This is MINDY, not Marc}

For years we have used drilled rotors which get impacted (and I end up poking the dust out w/a wire hanger -- like I am doing right now), crazed, and then cracked between the holes. I have been told that slotted rotors overcome some of these problems while still adequately venting for our driving styles. I was wondering two things:

1. Opinions on drilled v. slotted rotors in terms of wear (assume same brake pads -- Porterfields or Performance Friction race pads) and stopping.

2. Where to get slotted rotors for a 1995 993 C2 (believe it or not, harder to find than you think).

What? Isn't your wife/husband spending the morning checking out the brakes on the track car?

Thx much,

Mindy

I have had terrible experience with slotted rotors. Even worse than drilled. In fact, I went through two sets in a row that cracked along the slot after the first day of use. I'm back to regular factory rotors and I'm much happier (not slotted or drilled).

Mike --

Marc said that he has spoken to PFC and they don't have 'em. I just checked their website and confirmed. We are not quite ready to jump into the neat many piece floating rotors. We share a 993 and try hard to keep equipment costs in check.

Rick Deman (www.demanmotorsport.com) was doing custom slotted rotors for 996s/Boxsters. You could try giving him a call.

Slotted will last much much longer than drilled. Have ran both, slotted way to go..

I believe Mr Rightwood is the brake God, supplies lots of pro's. He wont sell to the public, so you need to find a shop that he deals with..

I think it depends on what brand of rotors you purchase. I have run both slotted and drilled rotors from AP Racing and they both last a long time. Drilled rotors from Coleman haven't lasted very long and the recent stock 964RS haven't lasted very long lately when used in a racing environment. OEM rotors from aftermarket supply houses often have heavily machined balance points and the rotors crack there.

Wrightwood Racing has a solution for you.

Thats it Wrightwood not Rightwood ty Geoffrey..

I am certain they can get you even more stopping power than you need.

Call Charlie at Wrightwood. He may or may not sell to you though. That's where I get my rotors. They are AP or Alcon rotors and I think he custom slots them. You may want to check AP or Alcon directly though, they're both in Britain.

Wrightwood will work through your shop. On top of doing first rate work they are the kind of people you would like to support.

FWIW I'm running 2pc/floating slotted ones (on my 350Z, not a p-car) - not by choice, it's what Stoptech offers in their AeroRotor line (and was scarily cheaper than stock / oem - especially considering I can just replace friciton rings). They have held up to almost 20 DE days now (going to replace the friction surface soon though) and the brakes feel great. A good bit of crazing / surface cracking but nothing dangerous/deep and no "connect-the-dots" problems like you get with drilled (or, hopefully holes-cast-in-then-beveled). As far as stopping vs blanks, I actually don't really think it makes a big difference but then I haven't gone back to blanks to compare...

I've never been too impressed with their stuff either. Glad it's not just me...

Call Steve Ruiz at StopTech Phone: +1 310 933 1100 Fax: +1 310 933 1108 and tell him that Jason Stuart from the GMG Racing Team told you to call. Steve and Dino Crescentini can both attest to the performance of the StopTech products from their own pro racing experience. I am installing a new set on my current GT3 RS build because I have personally witnessed the abuse they can take at the track and still provide the "Hand of GOD" stopping power you want all the way to the end of the session. Disclosure is that I haven't yet tried a set, just worked on them and around them this season in World Challenge racing, the pads are easy to change on the StopTech system too.
