Yeah, I've shied away from them with my truck. 1-2mpg is significant, though, but I'd want to understand clearly what risk I'm putting on my engine.

I did not buy the chip for MPG but for drivability. Its an amazing improvement. I also did not see a drop in mileage and that includes going to a larger tire. We put 305/75s on it and it looks much better and performes much better in Colorado where we take our winter trips. This thing eats up snow!
As for engine damage, I have 50K miles on it and no problems however that said, I don't drag race it either! I drive it nice and enjoy the added torque I have for pulling and merging in traffic. Where it felt very sluggish before the chip, now it feels torquey if thats a word. I have 5 settings on my chip. Stock, tow, milage and power and then race. I usually have it on Tow or milage but occasionally on power. Race is too much and puts out a lot of black smoke on acceleration. I see 18 MPG highway at 70mph. In town milage sucks so we use a scat car, our Nissan Versa to run errands at 30 mpg average.

I will say, I don't use my excursion to tow much anymore since I bought an RV 3 years ago. The RV gets 8mpg but no hotel to rent and I can sleep in my own bed. It tows much better than the excursion and its only around 4 mpg differance in the trip. The Excursion is now religated to moving my trailors around, people hauler for group activities and our colorado trips.

With no trailer I was getting between 18-18.5 mpg on the highway. With the Edge controller in tow mode (but not towing) I get 21-22mpg on average. This is on a 2001 7.3L PSD.

Hard to tell the impact when towing as wind resistence is a much bigger factor and it varies a lot.

As stated, the truck is much more drivable. The tranny also shifts faster and should reduce wear. Go to the Ford Enthusiasts Forum as there is lots of info about chips and controllers and I can't remember ever reading about any issues from their use.

Which of these do you have? I like that it includes a display with EGT, etc. Did you do the install yourself?

I've seen a number of threads like this that talk about tranny damage and blown headgaskets:

Is the tranny stuff related to the 6.0? The 7.3 uses a "dumb" four speed, right?

Not sure...seems like headgaskets are the big problem. Mind you, I have no idea of the magnitude. Just seen enough posts to make me pause (at least while I'm under warranty). I think I'll research it a little more.

Charlie,

Get the Edge with attitude. It is simple plug and play except for drilling a hole in the exhaust header( which isnt that bad) it has a display that shows egt, boost, revs and has 5 different levels of tune. Took me about an hour to do the total install. The 7.3 engines are a lot better then the 6.0 or the new 6.4s. The transmissions are ok as long as you are not drag racing your truck. I have noticed an improved mileage on my 7.3 but the first week it was horrible b/c my right foot was not off the floor. Also get a turbo back exhaust atleast 4" with a muffler it isnt really any louder then stock and really helps the motor to breath a lot better.

Chris
