I sailed a friend's boat back from the Bahamas last week, and can attest that the Abacos are spectacular. That said, St John and the BVI probably offer more all round in the way of natural beauty and options for the visitor. No comparo here, but I wouldn't try to talk someone out of St.John as a base in favor of anywhere else. Its a great spot.

Cuban cigars are available in the BVIs. On Tortola, don't miss the Sugar Mill Restaurant, owned by a former editor of Bon Appetit magazine and her husband. My wife and I had our 10th anniversary dinner there - wonderful!

^^ +1 on the NautiNymph if you are happy driving a small boat. Its a great way to get around the island and there are tons of secluded coves that offer great snorkelling and, well, seclusion :-)

+1 for Gallows Point, rent a car and snorkle all the St John beaches and try all the good restaurants, most in Cruz Bay. If price is no object, the best place is Caneel Bay preferably with a beachfront room. Fly into St Thomas and they take care of the rest. They provide a private ferry to the resort. The resort is on a 170 acre peninsula which has 7 varied beachs. There are several resort restaurants which have updated their cusine over the last few years. Makes my wife happy.

I know its too late now. Sorry I didn't see the post earlier. I've been to the USVI 5 or 6 times on trips of a week or more and absolutely love St. John the best. I second Caneel Bay, as it is my favorite, though it is pricey, but I never seem to care when I'm there. It is truly peaceful and beautiful. Long afternoons in Caneel Bay seem to help me find my center. BTW, I wish I could afford the $2.6 mil house.

I hope you are having/have had/had a wonderful trip.

If you guys dont mind I will also use the Rennlist Travel Agency. The post on the Abacos has me interested. Flying to Ft Lauderdale next month and it sounds like a nice add on.

Where to stay?
Restaurants?
Car/Boat/Scooter/Golf cart rental?
Love to snorkel, good spots?

CB you have a PM since you started it

Thanks

Arkadi,

Sent you a detailed reply.

For those looking for more detail you can google "hopetown abacos" as a nice starting point.

No affiliation - just an Abaco enthusiast.

OT Abaco info:

http://coconuttelegraph.net/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=2 (moderated by advertisers)

flying advise, get an early flight.. most are 'charter airlines' and schedules are varriable... if there is any problems the last flights get scratched (no landing lights). contentinal have better reputaion.

hotels:
hopetown harbor lodge, or abaco inn on elbow cay,
bluff house or green turtle inn on green turtle cay

many folks rent a house for the week...

if you get a boat: you need this: (good info anyway)
