I would recommend getting GPS with any system you purchase.
FWIW, almost all karting systems are AIM Mychron....there are a few Alfano, even fewer Unipro and for those with LOTS of money, the PI systems (yes PI system for a kart).
I've used AIM systems for a few years and they are pretty good....but the GPS opens up a whole new world of analysis.

The GPS certainly gives lap times and is easy. Do you plan to add rpm, throttle position and other sensors? While there is nothing wrong with the AIM, the Traqmate is extremely easy to use and the software is very simple to figure out and make use of.

Everyone has their favorite... I liked the TraqMate when a friend let me try his, I still like it. Easy to use, constantly updating (new features - no cost software upgrades), and basic enough for me to understand what it's trying to show / tell me. Plenty of users out there to share data with in similar cars. Check out my previous comments to similar questions about TraqMate...

I have the AIM MXL Pista with GPS.
You are welcome to come by and push its buttons and look at the data.
I of course will have no idea what it means (but I love the GPS).

I have the IQ3, the interface, for the money it is very nice. It's replaced my dash. Most of my friends are using the Racepak data so we can compare easily.
For the money it will serve what I need for quite a while.

That's what I am saying. Why buy a high end system right now unless you are the engineering type who will spend the time to learn it properly? Most of us are just looking for some overall information, and all of the low end systems have plenty of data ability. Being able to share and compare is a huge benefit.

Larry - I agree and actually led Paolo to the IQ3 as a great solution for the price. It's when the "compare data" comes into the equation that things get messy. Unfortunately for Paolo the majority of his track buddies are crazy "engineering types" (or computer science types....) and have gone down the AIM Pista path.
I still think, for about $2.5-$3K (professionally installed), you can get about the same function in the IQ3, Traqmate, or Racetech as I have in the AIM (which was about $4K installed) or you can just use it without sensors to start with. I'm not sure what the accuracy is (Hz) of the GPS in the lower priced systems, but would guess they are the same or close.
Paolo - just start noticing more cavities when you look in someones mouth!
