Lap Timer

Lap Timer
Hi Guys,
Need advice! I have done a search however most of the infor seems to be a higher spec than I am looking for.
All I want is a cheap (ie cheapest) lap timing device for my car (and yes I probably know the cheapest is my watch) With my skills I am not ready for any data logging equipment and would just like to know what times I am doing to hopefully see my improvement.
What cab people reccomend?
Is this any good - seems to be lowest cost one I can find from CDOC

HotLap Compact Display System
MSRP: $229.95
CDOC's Price: $213.85
Hot Lap Compact Display System. Now you can see your lap times instantly! Where dash space is limited - display is in smaller enclosure. Includes display, receiver, transmitter, harness, instructions. An infra-red transmitter mounted at trackside automatically triggers the In-Car Timer with 100% accuracy each and every lap - no thumb errors. Use the Double Range transmitter where access to the edge of the track is limited. Standard transmitter works up to 60 feet. Allows drivers see your lap times as they happen and lets you adjust your driving line to find the fastest time. Easy to install & remove, 60 lap memory with easy recall, and transmitter can be mounted inside or outside the track.

Hotlap works fine but is a bit behind the times. Ultralap is definately better.
One plus on the Hotlap column is that, because there are so common, always someone else has setup the transmitter on the tripod at the start/finish line, so one less thing to worry about.

Dan -
I have a complete MaxQData system for sale that won't cost much more than a standard lap timer but gives you a LOT more data (you can even use the data with the TrackVision software to integrate into video) than a lap timer. It's GPS based, requires no beacon, and you have the use of a Wireless Windows CE PDA to cruise the internet while your parked!
Info is here - http://www.maxqdata.com/
I have the:
MQGPS-5hz
Dell Axim X51v PDA
1 GB memory card
Dell USB Docking station, charger, manuals, etc.
I'll sell the whole system for $350.00

maxdata
Gary,
I'm willing to buy your maxdata setup. I will be at the cups & saucers event so you could teach me how to use it. What else would I need to install in my 968 F stock race car.
Regards,
Giacomo

Giacomo - All you need to do is put a couple pieces of velcro to stick the GPS (on the upper dash under the windscreen) and to hold the PDA somewhere where you can see and access it. There is nothing to install. I haven't used it in a year but I have the manual printed in color and in a 3-ring binder.

You want cheap? I have a complete HotLap compact available (sender, reciever and display) for $150 and also a Compact display (with a small dent in it) and reciever for $80. I don't need them anymore because I switched to MoTeC.

+1 on the Aim lap timer. Mine works perfectly, is easy to read, and since not too many run them, there is no beacon signal confusion. Too many beacons is a common issue with the Hotlap timers.
I had an Intercomp timer, but I think I got 2 laps worth of information in 2.5 years of use. Junk...

I like the AIM lap timer but it is a bit more expensive than others.
I had the opposite experience with an Intercomp. It worked great for me and was very simple. I only used it for one weekend before I installed the AIM dash.
