Apparently, on the NY State Thruway tolls, they don't have the axle sensors, and as such, you can only go through the automated lanes with EZ Pass if you obtain a special (free) tag:

If you don't have this special tag, you need to go through a manned EZ-Pass / Cash lane, and state to the teller that you have extra axles. They will then adjust your EZ-Pass changes and let you through.
Not sure if this applies to other NY state tolls, but that is the case for the NY Thruway.

How to Sign up for a Special Towing Tag
If you want to use a dedicated E-ZPass lane when towing a trailer, camper or boat you can now get a special tag. The tag is programmed for the tow vehicle and trailer combination. The tag must only be used with the vehicle towing combination. This eliminates the need to use a staffed lane which will reduce your travel time. You must first have established an E-ZPass account with the New York E-ZPass Customer Service Center. Just fill out the form below to request your special tag.

Z, never have done that on the Thruway, and never have had any problem. Maybe what you are reading is out of date????
You are digging too deep....just do it!

According to EZ Pass, what you are "supposed" to do is go to a manned tollbooth, tell them you have EZ Pass, and they will input that you are a different class than a normal two axle vehicle for that EZ Pass trip.
There are hefty fines for not doing this, including their "administrative fees".

Three Wheelin'
NYS has a blue EZ pass for towing a trailer. It's no charge and will avoid hassles with DMV and EZ pass when you go through a EZ pass lane that doesn't have the proper sensors.

Technically, you are supposed to use a different EZ-Pass when pulling a trailer. I checked with them. I have the normal white EZ-Pass and a "Pink" one for pulling a trailer

"I sometimes pull a camper or trailer with my vehicle. Can I still use my tag?
Yes. In this instance the equipment in the lane is designed to identify that your vehicle is pulling a trailer and you will be charged accordingly. However, if you think this will be a regular occurrence, you should call the Customer Service Center and have them send you a tag programmed for the vehicle classification you use most frequently. You should never use your tag in a vehicle type other than the one you initially requested (i.e. Car tag in a tractor-trailer)."

Also sounds like make-work for the overpaid unionized toll booth "workers"...

I once went through manual gate and the clerk told me I did not need too -- subsequently I called Maryland EZ pass and they said they counted axles automatically. My statements which included towing to MO, WG, VIR, and others clearly show that they are charging more for towing then for the truck by itself. Also, at first I mistakenly put one easy pass in the car being towed and this resulted in a very high toll. Two near simultaneous tolls for 8 axles. Don't do that.
Some of the toll lanes say vehicles less then 5 ton GVW or something like that and I have usually ignored that sign. Should be pretty close.
