I'd probably say the RA-1 at full tread would be best R-Comp for both, because they will heat up quicker than MPSC for Autox use. My MPSC's take about 1-2 laps to heat up depending on outside temp. They do not heat up in a >60 second autox run.
Other options are V710's or other Kuhmo AX tire.

Dan get the Toyo R888. They are the replacement for the RA-1 and a good tire. I believe they are the best compromise between grip/life/cost in an R tire.

Query: Why do you need a better tire? Do you want to put down faster lap times?

Here's some food for thought:
1. Don't give up on the RA-1's just yet -- you were on an old set that were probably heat cycled beyond their sweet spot. (The RA-1's are known for this, given their long-tread life).

2. IIRC, you are an intermediate driver. If so, you aren't nearly at the limits of the RA-1's, even the old ones you were on.

3. The performance delta between the RA-1's, MPSC's, Kumho's, (insert the next best R-compound tire) is very small. You'd have to jump into a Hoosier R6 or possibly some other ultra-slick, barely DOT approved R-compound. Such tires will typically run you alot more coin, and not last as long. And you won't be extracting the most out of them, given the fact that you're not near the limits on the 'standard' R's. I wouldn't consider that money well spent.

4. Want to go faster? Learn to drive better. Seat time seat time seat time. Even in AX, over the long run, improving your driving skill will yield better times than improving your tires.

-Z-man.
At this point I am not really even timing my laps. It is just time for new tires and my sickness is I like to get the best. you are right about me not nearing the limits of the tires so I guess I getting the best of the best isn't necessary so I change my question to:

What would be a good DE/autocross tire me for in intermediate track driver? (However, I do want the best tire that would fit into that category)

Does anybody know how the R888s compare to the RA-1s?

Look for mooty over the 997 GT2/3 board. He has tried both since a huge fan of RA-1 but if I remember correctly, the R-888 weren't lasting as long as the RA-1.

Dan -
Then like I said - Toyo RA-1's. This will be my 5th season on them. In my opinion, they are the best all-round tire for DE/AX.

Local shop $250 per tire mounted and balanced for Toyo R888. Good price?

He said he can't get RA-1 anymore.

Dan -
For 16's that's a bit on the high side.

What's the best way to "break in" a new set of RA-1's?

The break in for full tread RA-1's is about 6-12 sessions on track. That should do it. So just drive them. Shaving to 4/32 cuts the break in time to 6 sessions or so.

I am thinking of the RA1 or maybe the Kumho Ecsta V700 for a sunny day street tire and occasional autocross/drag race tire. I have used the RA1 on the street and they were pretty comfortable. I want something comfortable but grippy.
I will be using the widest 18" sizes.

Does anyone have any experience with either of these on the street, or have another recommendation? I need something with more grip than a normal street tire as my car has too much torque for a street tire.

The RA-1 is being discontinued so availbility will be rather low. The R888 is the replacement .
