Default Hewland

Let's say I've completely lost my mind and/or won the lottery and decided to put a sequential gear box in a 911 GT class car. Does Hewland make a transmission for rear engined cars? How hard is this to do?

How are you going to get around this rule in the GT general requirements?

'Engine and transmission cases must be Porsche factory components'

There is a guy in our club with a sequential trans built in a porsche case, made by some Australlian company (I don't remember the name).

"Yes" and "not hard, but not cheap".

Google Mid Valley Engineering, and get out your wallet. Maybe get a firm hold of your ankles at the same time.

I think Saenz used to/still does make something, too. Of course, in typical Saenz tradition, you have to take the brand new box apart, throw out all the bearings, re-clearance everything etc. before you can actually use it.

Sort of semi-related to that, what about keeping everything in the G-50 OEM except the synchros themselves? At $900-$1100 a pair new, I would think you could get some made, or modify some from another application off the shelf, to work, for a lot less money. Anyone ever tried this?

Guard Transmission has straight cut gears available to create a "crash box" out of a G50. Hewland did make a sequential gearbox for the Porsche 993 cars. Tony Callias knows about them.

Yeah, it would probably be a lot cheaper and easier to go to a dogbox.

If I was going to go the route of doing anything like that I'd first call Taylor Race Engineering. They are some serious gurus with Hewland and other racing transmissions.

Wow, I didn't realize you GT guys went that far. Redesigning a tranny within the case to conform to the rules seems way out there for me.

I guess that's why I stick to the stock classes.

Good Luck!

Why not just use a 997cup/RSR sequential? Fits any 3.2 on up case. Holinger makes the gear display and software control for the flat upshifts.

Holinger is the Aus company that makes a whole guts replacement for race 996 GT2/GT3 gearboxes that is sequential.

They replace eveything inside.

With the exchange rate the last time I checked the conversion parts were $20K not including the gearbox - several years ago they were only $14K.

The downer is that they custom make everything and it takes 3 months.

So if you are considering one you should really buy 2 full sets in case you need spares because according to Holinger you wont normally be able to get the parts during the season.

It is rated to handle 650 ft-lbs.

I did all the research before I ended up swapping to a cable shift race 996 GT2 gearbox.

I also checked in Ricardo and the like...

By the rules the case I believe must be a factory Porsche case so that limits the options.

I may try the Holinger upgrade next year we will see...

btw - Cory's suggestion is a good one. I could do it due to my torque...
