Comming down to the wire and it's pop or walk on either car...
Porsche 930 (turbo, whale tale wing), 1984, set up for track work with cage and suspension ect
vs
C5Z, 02, cage and suspension ect
Both cars are similar price...similar WHP...similar weight (perhaps the 930 is a bit lighter) and similar tire sizes.
I'd like to stick with what I know, had a C5z before, but the alure of a different car is tempting...and the 930 was the "hot" car when I was in high-school...same effect of the baby-boomers buying 'Cudas and old-school muscle. I have several years of autox/track under my belt now, so the lack of nannies on the 930 doesn't scare me.
So which one is really the "one to have" for FTD???
Your thoughts?
Be good,

The vette will make you look like a hero, regardless. It's a much easier car to drive, and has 20 years on the 930. That said, the quality of people in PCA vs. those of the Vette clubs, as well as the sheer amount of personality the 930 exudes w.r.t. the vette.
For me, it's a clear choice: 930. You'll have an easier time w/ the vette, and repairs will be cheaper, and you'll love the crazy torque the LS motor produces. But the vette is completely bland and lacking in personality, and won't ever TRULY challenge you the way a 930 will.

I run with PDA/NASA, where they welcome all makes, not a brand-specific club...so the "quality" of people is not an issue...(WTF does that mean anyway)
I've had a supercharged Z06 before, so I'm familiar with the car but not so much with the 930. The specific 930 has been a track-dog for over 10 years and is currently getting an engine rebuild and new clutch, the reason why I haven't been able to test drive it and the reason why I'd even consider a car of such "vintage"...a newly rebuilt motor and clutch are nice things, yes?
As for the "challenge" of driving a car fast, I'll share my thoughts as I'm currently coming from an '06 STI that is EASY to drive fast, as it has 3 diffs and the center one is computer controlled. I've handed the azzes of some very expensive/exclusive sports-cars to their owners with my econo-sedan but it's not an emotional drive...like a honda vs a Ducati (I've had two). Having a "challenging" car has it's rewards, but getting passed by a more modern platform or a better engineered car is worse. I could very easily loosen the camber bolts on my and car or dial in a great deal of toe-out in the rear and make it quite a challenge to drive well, but that isn't going to make me have any more fun...dig?
I know the 930 is a great car and very potent on the track, but I wonder just how much one needs to "invest" in order to mine that potential.
Thanks,
TomK

I'd get the vette. 930 maintenance is expensive, especially if you aren't doing your own work. Not sure where you are on that. Also, the parts are expensive.
I never found our 930 all that challenging to drive at the track. Of course it is totally stock, so the characteristics probably aren't as pronounced as they would be with heavy torsion bars or coil-overs like the '84 probably has that you are talking about. Even so, you are right. You are out there to have fun. I never got the whole "I am so accomplished in life that I can afford to drive fast cars yet I demand continued accomplishment by proving I drive a car that is challenging" schtick
As for the "quality" of the people that is garbage. NASA is really cool and we are doing 944 Fest with them at the last race this year.
Whatever you do don't get a 951. I am putting mine back together and it is a disaster.

Yeah, sorry but although the 930 is COOL, the z06 will absolutely slaughter it on track for a fraction of the price and has the added bonus of a bit of technology like ABS and whatnot.

I'd go with the Vette. Great track car out of the box, newer, parts are cheaper...
I love 930s, but the car is vintage and will cost more to maintain with all of the track wear-and-tear...
My $0.02,
-Blake

Get the vette unless you can afford a new Porsche with all the safety equipment. Thats the practical answer.
Now, what would you love to drive? Which car would WOW You looking at it the garage and every time you get in it. That is what I would use to make my decision.
It was easy for me because Porsche is the only marque I really love.
