Yes, I too must recant my previous statement. Buy the vette, you're clearly coming from a different direction than I had previously understood.
And to clarify my previous statement (which it seems a few of you had a problem with), I was merely pointing out that the 930 is a more interesting car. The Z06 is a fantastically fun car (I've driven my friend's C5 Z05 numerous times at the track) and, like the expressionless Evo or Sti, will be very easy to drive fast on the track. It will also beat the pants off the 930, be cheaper, and always leave you grinning, albeit (in my previous experience) not quite as much as a 930 will.
Also, i never meant to offend re: the "quality of people" statement. I know a few people who own both Porsches and Vettes, and who belong to both clubs. Every one of them say that the PCA guys are just nicer all-around people. From what I've seen, both clubs are great and have their "good and bad hats."
Geez, I never meant to offend, just tell it like it is.
Oh and Gator, your "schtick" towards which you pointed is not at all what I was getting at. For some weird reason, I'm all about a car's personality, and to me, the vette has none. This is a huge reason I'm partial to the 930. it's not a matter of affluence (which I have none if you must know), but of how much a particular car challenges me. The 930 does, the vette, not as much. I enjoy a challenge.
Now get over yourself. Oh and 951s are great cars! Mine's stupid reliable *knock on wood* (and also stock)

Oh and since you do PDA/NASA stuff and (I'm assuming) not as much exclusive PCA/Vette club, just forget entirely my comment about the "quality of people." It'll be easier that way.

I hate to say it, but the Vette would be my choice. I tracked my 930S for about 5 years, went thru 2 engine rebuilds at $20K+ each, suspension upgrades, gearbox rebuild, etc etc etc. It is a very fun car to drive, and you sure learn throttle control in a 500 HP single turbo car, but the uncertainty every weekend if it is going to make it, looses it's appeal after a while. If the 930 had a EFI conversion done, it would've made it a lot more reliable, but that costs another $8-10K. After my last rebuild about 3 years ago, the car was retired from track duty and I bought a 996GT3. The GT3 at $100K+ saved me money compared to the 930. The 930 is now a garage queen that get's taken out for Sunday drives, and nothing beats it. But as a track car (you will never be able to keep it stock !!!!) it was less then ideal.

I can see arguments for both but the Vettes just don't do much for me (I owned a C5). I don't like the seating position or the view out the windshield. Nothing to do with technicalities just emotion or personal taste. So I would have to say, 930. I realize my opinion is useless to you but ....that's it.

The 930 is a sushi knife and the vette is a meat hammer. The 930 will force you to be smoother and over time, this will make you a better driver.

Yes, Corvettes are often brutally fast. And fast is fun. BUT, as suggested above, the Corvette (arguably) has no soul. It's a big American-made bully. Driving an old 911 is so much more interesting, and I would say rewarding.
But having said that, a 930 would be way down the list of "new" track cars for me... especially a 4-speed one (no offense to the 930 owners out there).
One of my track buddies drives a 930. He absolutely loves it and will probably never get rid of it... even though he seems to have a significant mechanical issue every other weekend...
Another friend of mine tracked a Z06 for about a year while he was waiting on his new 997. Though obviously fast, I don't think he cared much for it and was happy to finally get rid of it.

Fantastic replies...some quite surprising from a P-car board. A thousand thanks.
Yes, looking at the cars - the 930 has great appeal. I would no doubt sit on the stoop and stare at that car whilst the sun set and would be entranced by it's beauty.
But it scares me...yep, the rebuild is costing $15K now and that really scares me, as a new LS7 (7liter engine of the new Z06) costs that much and the LS6 costs less than half for a new crate motor.
I have chosen to go the route of the Z06. Being 6'4", I just fit in them better, too. I've found one from my old tuner, low miles and a great deal of powertrain work...great value. 3100lbs, 315front/335rear tires, 450whp...tough to beat that for low 30's.
Again, thank you all for your input. Perhaps another day I'll find myself here. Until then, see you at the track!!!
Be good,
TomK
