Lewis glad he is OK!!! Glad the story had a happy ending. Your son must be close to being ready for the Cup.
I looked at the website .. Leatt looks interesting. How much are they .. I could not find a price on the site.

FWIW, the Moto Kart is the same as the Moto GPX, the only difference is the rear plastic piece comes up higher on the Kart than the GPX. Existing GPX owners can upgrade by simply contacting Leatt for the Kart rear piece.

When he's 18, the Cup is his. Hell, I haven't driven it in 2 years and probably won't for the next 3 years......I'll just keep it washed/waxed for him until then.

He was one of the first ones to buy/wear one and everytime we showed up at a track, parents would ask where to buy one. I can remember at least 10-12 parents who bought them.
We're starting to see a few more each time we go to a National event.
However, I am still stunned that the Snap On Stars of Karting (IRL) passed a rule this year that allows Senior competitors to wear NOTHING, not even a foam collar. They all complained they were too hot to wear. I can't imagine driving with nothing, regardless of age.

Of course, he also wants to take the 996TT (the garage queen) to his prom when the time comes....I told him, sure when you take a Victoria's Secret supermodel to the prom.

...And of course being a kid, his first comments were:
1. I can't believe they cut me out of my driving suit (factory suit from Italy)
2. How bad is my helmet (new helmet/custom paint for this season) and once he saw it, Can I get a new one?
3. Do you think I'll make the March race?

But to hear those comments tells a story... And it's a good one. hurting yourself in sports can effect you in a big way, even if you don't want it to.
It's crucial to have that kind of attitude and go back as soon as possible so that you put it behind you, otherwise it might start effecting you even if you think it's not making any difference.
And when he looks at the tape of the accident after everything is "back on track" aqnd he's healioed etc., I bet he thinks: "cool!"
My grandpa always said: "Boys will be boys" and that was evident couple of weeks ago when a hockey stick made a 2" cut just below my right eye and every kid my son's hockey team saw it, thought it looked "so cool!".
My wife, not so much... I can easily imagine the "hug" you got from here, that's how mom's are, it ir YOUR FAULT that her baby was hurt (baby is completely innocent) so deal with it!

Yes, the Moto R (for restrained applications) is SFI38.1 certified.
IIRC, there currently is no SFI certification for the non restrained units, the GPX and Kart.

Here is a link to the original discussion on the Moto R (back in July 06 when I started looking at Leatt brace for my son).

The 'Kart' or 'GPX' for non restrained drivers are $395.
The 'Moto R' for restrained drivers (still not for sale) was $995 pre-order IIRC.

He identifies his 'outs' in case of contact or emergency in addition to the usual reference markers, track defects, unusual curbing, etc.
He keeps a track map by his chair and driver's bag and usually studies a track map for at least a full week prior to arriving at a new track.
I usually walk the track seperately (nervous I guess) in the morning and pick up/remove debris that might cause a tire problem.
After that, it's all fate and racer's luck I suppose.
