Porsche upgrades GT3 RSR for '08 racing
The Porsche 911 GT3 RSR is the most powerful race car based on the Porsche 911 sports coupe and won the 24-hour races at Le Mans, Spa in and Nurburgring 24 hours in Germany - but it's been further improved for 2008.
The 911 GT3 RSR, designed to race in the GT2 class of international long-distance racing, has been extensively modified, particularly at the front with major improvements to the aerodynamics.
Most of the innovations, however, are hidden beneath the light body - inlcuding a new gearbox.
Aside from the easily recognisable additional spoilers on the front apron, so-called "flicks" intended to optimise airflow by creating more aerodynamic downforce and less drag.
The rear, including the wing, has been carried over from the previous car but extensive changes to the suspension kinematics have increased grip considerably and the range of suspension set-up options.
The 3.8-litre, flat-six engine is unchanged apart from slight improvements to details. It delivers 342kW at 8000rpm and maximum torque of 430Nm at 7250rpm. The rev limiter kicks in at 9400rpm.
Much of the know-how in the new gearbox is from the RS Spyder sports prototype race car. This sequential six-speed unit developed by Porsche is considerably lighter and has much less internal friction than its predecessor.
Only 35 units
Alongside the GT3 Cup and the GT3 Cup S, the GT3 RSR is the third race car based on the Porsche 911 to be offered by Porsche Motorsport in Weissach, Germany.
The company will build 35 of this fastest and most powerful racing derivative of the 911 for customer teams around the globe.
The base price of the 911 GT3 RSR is €349 800 - nearly R4-million!

Just me or the changes are mostly aero? Are they aiming for the '06 Ferrari with this? Expected more changes but hope it's enough for '08 to keep more team from defecting...

Am I totally biased, or is that just the best looking GT2 car by far at ALMS, including the '09 BMW and Ferraris? It would be interesting to get a professional aesthetic opinion.
BTW, its not just aero they did. I understand they also improved the weight distribution and the gearbox (using their Spyder experience). The new gearbox design enables it to be lower and also allow for a wider range of set-up.

I actually liked the look of last year's car better. From a form follows function standpoint, I think the BMW is my favorite. From a purely aesthetics standpoint, I like the Ferrari.

Love the fender flairs and how the body work goes way around the rear tires. I wish the stock 997S looked like this!

Porsche factory told teams to not even bother with tire testing on the 07 chassis because the 08 is so different. Rumor has it the 08 is night and day in the handling dept from the 07. Plus, it does a much better job with rear tire mgt thanks to the new suspension setup and weight distribution. ![ducking](https://rennlist.com/forums/graemlins/icon107.gif)
